Yes, then I realized all the sterotypes were true. Frat guys are stupid, beer swilling neanderthals that spend way too much of their time trying to get laid. So I left. I can get alcohol and women on my own time, I don't need to pay them a few grand a semester to have them pretend to like me.
Yes, I am currently a member of Alpha Tau Omega. What you just said is completely untrue of my frat. I was a legacy of SAE and here on the VT campus they are that stereotype to the letter. Not all frats are like that though. I joined ATO because they are the exact opposite of the stereotype. Yes, we drink... but how many college students don't drink? Yes, we try to get laid... just like every other single male college student (that actually talks to women). I feel that my $300 a semester goes to a very good cause. It pays for our house, the trips we take during the semester, and the parties we throw during the weekends for everyone else on campus that wants to let off steam. I guarantee that counting all the trips we take, the camping we do, and everything else could not be paid for with a single persons $300, so I'm actually geting more out of my money than I'm putting in.
As for pretending to like the people in the frat... I'm sorry that you aren't of the mentality to open your mind to people outside your normal clique. I have 45 brothers in my fraternity and I am personal friends with every one of them. I could name any brother and tell you at least 5 stories about every one of them. True, the majority of them are not the same mentality that I am, but I don't see that as a bad thing. I'm now friends with rednecks, computer geeks, jocks, slackers, and probably at least 1 person from every group that you were exposed to in high school. Every one of them is a good friend of mine. Can you say you know that wide variety of people and call them your friends? You do know that the entire rush period is designed to make sure that you do want to be in a frat, and that the frat you choose is going to be right for you, right?
As for grades... you should know that the greek average on campus is actually higher than the non greek average GPA, so your "stupid" comment is completely unbiased. The majority of schools require any fraternities to hold a pretty decent average otherwise they lose their charter (the frat dies). That will motivate most people to study a bit more than most people.
End rant
As for stories... they range all over the place. Do you have a few days? We've built additions to our house with 0 knowledge of construction, which was an interesting project (came out very professional looking too... thanks to instructions on the internet). We've done all sorts of rock climbing, hiking, boating on rivers, 4 wheeling on mud trails, video game playing, etc... In fact I'm leaving on Tuesday to go spend a few days at one of our brothers' lake house. He decided to have us up there for a few days of water skiing, tubing, and knee boarding with his families boat.
What did I have to do to get in? That I can't tell you
Gotta have some secrets in there
And don't ask me about our secret handshake either
