where you in a frat?

And any interesting stories to tell?

What did you have to do to get in?

Just curious as I live in England and don't know much of what 'actually' goes on. Only seen stuff in the movies......

only about 10% of UT is in the greek system, so no, and i was in the large majority for it.

Yes, then I realized all the sterotypes were true. Frat guys are stupid, beer swilling neanderthals that spend way too much of their time trying to get laid. So I left. I can get alcohol and women on my own time, I don't need to pay them a few grand a semester to have them pretend to like me.

Yes, I was.

Frat guys are stupid

Must have just been at your school. At Wake Forest most of the guys in my frat were highly intelligent. Just in my frat class, we had a chemistry major, a bio major, a psychology major, a comp sci major, and 2 politics majors. All of us did very well.

Now, the drunk and sex part was mostly true...but that's no different than other college guys.

Yes, I am currently a member of Alpha Tau Omega. What you just said is completely untrue of my frat. I was a legacy of SAE and here on the VT campus they are that stereotype to the letter. Not all frats are like that though. I joined ATO because they are the exact opposite of the stereotype. Yes, we drink... but how many college students don't drink? Yes, we try to get laid... just like every other single male college student (that actually talks to women). I feel that my $300 a semester goes to a very good cause. It pays for our house, the trips we take during the semester, and the parties we throw during the weekends for everyone else on campus that wants to let off steam. I guarantee that counting all the trips we take, the camping we do, and everything else could not be paid for with a single persons $300, so I'm actually geting more out of my money than I'm putting in.

As for pretending to like the people in the frat... I'm sorry that you aren't of the mentality to open your mind to people outside your normal clique. I have 45 brothers in my fraternity and I am personal friends with every one of them. I could name any brother and tell you at least 5 stories about every one of them. True, the majority of them are not the same mentality that I am, but I don't see that as a bad thing. I'm now friends with rednecks, computer geeks, jocks, slackers, and probably at least 1 person from every group that you were exposed to in high school. Every one of them is a good friend of mine. Can you say you know that wide variety of people and call them your friends? You do know that the entire rush period is designed to make sure that you do want to be in a frat, and that the frat you choose is going to be right for you, right?

As for grades... you should know that the greek average on campus is actually higher than the non greek average GPA, so your "stupid" comment is completely unbiased. The majority of schools require any fraternities to hold a pretty decent average otherwise they lose their charter (the frat dies). That will motivate most people to study a bit more than most people.

End rant

As for stories... they range all over the place. Do you have a few days? We've built additions to our house with 0 knowledge of construction, which was an interesting project (came out very professional looking too... thanks to instructions on the internet). We've done all sorts of rock climbing, hiking, boating on rivers, 4 wheeling on mud trails, video game playing, etc... In fact I'm leaving on Tuesday to go spend a few days at one of our brothers' lake house. He decided to have us up there for a few days of water skiing, tubing, and knee boarding with his families boat.

What did I have to do to get in? That I can't tell you
Gotta have some secrets in there
And don't ask me about our secret handshake either

Same with my house. The guys in my house are mostly business and econ majors. More than half of our house gets above a 3.5 GPA --I know because the Greek association publishes the list every year

You can be stupid and be in a frat but it's not a prerequisite by any means

Ha . I was wondering when someone was gonna say that.

Because of course, you don't call your country...

Yes... way back in the day...I often hear about how it's "buying your friends" and what not...and that might be the case for some people...but not mine...

I joined for 2 reasons only...#1 Women....while I could and always did hook up on my own...the fraternity life made it 200% easier...I mean....women everywhere and EASY to hook up with....#2 Connections....I met plenty of people but only stayed good friends with a handful...and it has made my life easier for getting better jobs, getting cheaper cars, clothes, electronics, you get my drift.

In all it was a great experience...plus I knew the Comptroller...so I didn't pay dues anyway

You should maybe try talking to some of the guys, instead of just believing what you see on TV. At my school, the campus wide GPA is 2.75, in my fraternity house we have an accum. of 3.2. Even though this point is getting beat into the ground like a scratched cd, most college kids drink, and most like to try to get on girls. Also, a few grand a semester?!? Are you kidding me? I live in a fraternity house, and with dues, room, and board, I pay about $150 less than living in the dorms. Get your facts straight.

And since you are so much smarter than us stupid frat guys, why don't you learn to spell check. Its stereotypes, not sterotypes.

Not in a fraternity, but being on the rugby team is pretty much like a frat, just without all the stupid stuff they do.

I was in a sorority.

To get in we had to spend a week rushing and then you choose your sorority and they choose you. Then once you pledge, you have to attend study groups a couple of nights a week and one or two meeting every week. We also had certain pledge duties such as cleaning the house, answering the phone and other stuff like that. The pledge duties at the house are designed to get the pledges to hang out and get to know the other girls. At the end of pledgeship (ours lasted for 6 months) then you go through I-Week which is the week before Initiation. That is when all the secret stuff happens. Then you get Initiated and you are a member.

Some of the stories and stereotypes are true, but most are not. Sorority girls are not easy, stupid and materialistic. Yes, we drank and we drank a lot but I think that is not unique to people in the Greek system.

There is a lot more good that goes on in the Greek system than most people know. Greeks get a bad rap and they always will by non-Greek people. But, I don't think you can judge someone until you have truly spent time in their shoes. If you think that Greeks are stupid and spend all their time drinking beer and trying to get laid, then I say that is just as true as saying all non-Greeks are total nerds, that spend all their time studying, have no fun and couldn't get a date if they tried.

I second this entirely... except for the part about being in ATO. I am in Phi Kappa Tau.
