- if you wanted to talk to someone, you had to find a landline phone and hope the other person was there
Or, maybe just go see them in person.
- if you wanted to send someone a document, you had to snail mail it
You left out typing in the fields.
- if you wanted to look something up, you had to go to the library
This is a bad thing? Too many think wiki is the sum total of knowledge.
- if you wanted to wank off to porn, you had to buy the dirty magazines and/or moves (unless you had the hookups to bootlegged VHS copies)
VHS is modern tech. You needed to know someone with access to 16 mm film and then find a projector.

P.S. I was online in 1976 although, I had to ride the bus to the University of Minnesota to do it.

1997 or 1998 for me. Tiger woods 99 online with 56k modem baby. The day i got cable was like heaven.....downloading those 50 to 80MB Golf Courses was done in 5 minutes as opposed to a day or so.

Online at school in 1985. I remember my introduction - a message popped up on the screen of the console I was at, connected to a VAX11/780. It was someone from Rochester Institute of Technology (Or University of Rochester, one or the other.) 1986, I was on a Bell Labs computer using Unix, and that was heaven. Didn't have internet at home until about 1991. 14.4kbps modem. A few years later, when the new 33.6 kbps modems came out, it was like heaven, it was so fast. Then, the invention of mp3's. Anyone remember scour net (pre-napster?) You could download a SONG in about half an hour!

Online probably late 1995 with Microsoft Network, Packard Bell Pentium 90 and a 14.4 modem. Built my first computer a P3 550 around 2000, which brought me here researching motherboards and memory.

I remember downloading Win98 for the first time off USENET on a 28.8k modem. Told my father not to pick up the phone for ohh, 1.5 days? I remember thinking how awsome it would be once I got a 56k and downloads such as that would only take 15 or so hours.

I remember buying my first internet. Must have been summer of 94. Told the salesperson at J&R I wanted to buy internet. He pointed to the wall where I found Netscape for sale.

By 1998, I was already rockin' broadband. 1994? I routinely went to the neighborhood library to use Webcrawler and NintendoPowerSource but soon got an X-Band video game modem for my SNES (early beta test market) and started sending "X-Mail" to people on AOL and other online places. I had a black and white Mac Plus but it wasn't until I got a Windows 95 machine that I truly went on the www at home.

I was online in '93. I was at Northwestern and a dorm mate showed me a cool beta program called Mosaic. We thought it was awesome because it allowed you to display graphics and text easily on a web page. Novel concept back then.

I had Prodigy in the late 80's/early 90's but it didn't have internet access. Graduated HS in 94 and then in late 94 went to a party at a friend's college dorm and he had internet access and blew it my mind! Two days later I went and got hooked up to Netcom and never looked back!

Sometime in 97. I wanted to build my own computer because I knew it was possible but didn't feel I had enough knowledge and had no one to turn to for help and guidance. All my friends thought building your own was a certain road to disaster.

So, we dropped about $2500 for a system and within a year of being online I'd learned enough to build a new rig. 440BX based system. I got most if not all of my knowledge from a site called anandtech. This young guy name Anand Lal Shimpi had a hardware site hosted by Geocities.
