1981 - My mom let me get online on our dumb terminal with 300 baud accoustically coupled modem, log onto the Carnegie Mellon University mainframe and play Collassal Cave and Rogue.

it's a series of pipes

I think we got AOL on our 1994 Acer desktop, but I can't remember. We might not have tried the whole internet thing until 95 or 96.
I think that computer may have only had a 14.4 modem.
There was a 56k modem (or we ended up upgrading the modem to 56k) in the Gateway system we got in 97. We were definitely running with AOL on the Gateway, ended up getting a dedicated phoneline for the PC too.

That's hilarious. I didn't get online until 1996. In 1991 I got an 8088 computer and I kept it until Christmas of 1995 when I got a Pentium 60. I thought Doom was virtual reality. It was a big jump.

If BBS's count then I've been online since probably 1987 or so. Otherwise it would have been when I got a unix account in high school ~1993 or so.

Thinking about the BBS life just reminded me of Empire and Tradewars!

Ha! I'd completely forgotten the days of having a second, dedicated land-line just for your dial-up account. :awe:

Was emailing in 1992/1993. I was playing MUD's on a 2400 baud modem in college in 1993. I can't remember doing browser related stuff until 1994.

Didn't get online until '98.
That's when I bought my 2nd Computer: P1-133, 16 MB RAM, 1.2 Gig HD! (First was an old 286 box from a school surplus sale)
Did not come with a modem, so I bought a 33.6K, only thing available at the time.
About a month later they introduced the blazing fast 56K!!! (At least here in my neck of the woods)
I lived 15 miles from my ISP with old crappy phone lines and always got a crappy, slow connection. (The noise from my electric fence chargers didn't help either)
The 33.6 modem actually was slightly faster than the 56K.

I have even fonder memories of getting knocked offline when my parents picked up the phone while I was online and the madness that would inevitably ensue... thus finally leading to the 2nd one.

I believe I started with BBS and Prodigy networks sometime in the late 80's, and then moved to INN (Sierra) in the early 90's. Shadows of Yserbius was the cause of many, many large monthly usage bills.

Hah. Their graphic person made an "a" with a circle around it instead of a tail. It's not even a proper @ sign.

1995 for me...kinda. The XBAND Video Game Modem for SNES had "X-Mail" and you could send to email addresses.

1995 or 1996 for me I think. We didn't even have a computer until then either. I remember being in 6th grade and typing papers on my dad's computer at work or using the typewriter we had at home.
