I personally am nervous about these WD Green drives.

I have the WD15EADS model and it is the only HD I have ever owned that could not playback high bitrate mkvs properly. I have tried to find a firmware update online but have failed.

Maybe with the R series they fixed this issue, but personally I might never buy another WD again. All I need space for is HD media. If it doesn't work for that it is useless to me!

You may want to edit the title to reflect it's $89.99 after MIR. It sounds like it's an instant rebate based on your title.

!

Maybe it's because it runs @ 5400RPM?

I'd think you need a 7200RPM drive for that application...

The issue that the above poster is experiencing might have to do with the "WD Advanced Format technology" for this drive.

You can read about it at WD's web site, but I happened to read a review about it on Amazon:

The EADS he has is not an Advanced format drive. The EARS drive the OP referenced is. The EADS is a 'standard' 512 sector drive.

I have no stuttering playing a 27GB Fight Club Bluray rip sitting on my green drive, muchless mkv files. The problem must be somewhere else in the chain for you, or just a bad drive.

Please point me to where I can download one of these videos. I have a number of these drives and I find it hard to believe the drive is to slow for proper playback. It's gotta be something else in your system and I'd be happy to prove it to you.

no proof is needed

Bluray goes up to 40Mb per second which is 5MB/second. Hard drives from 10 years ago can do that.

Well I will take you all's advice on it and get my drive RMAed. No special mkv works poor on it- just about any scene release over 8gb hurts it.

I guess I just have a bad drive. Purchase away!

How are you playing it? Are you playing it over network? Wireless? Are you doing any other activity that may be taxing the drive at the same time you're trying to play mkv?
