Today Only at Amazon Western Digital 1.5 TB Caviar Green SATA Hard Drive for $84.99 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002ZCXJZE

Please link directly to the item at Amazon, not the deal at another site. Looks like this is OOS at the $84.99 price. I see $118.xx sold by a vendor other than Amazon.

I'm very tempted to get me one of these now... I don't like being on the forefront of these kinds of technology changes though, these drives seem to have a very high failure rate.

I haven't seen reports anywhere of high failure rates on the EARS drives?

My guess is its not the drive but users not following directions (printed on the drive itself). I just spent 3 day learning all about these drives and how to correctly build partitions and format them in Linux with the new 4k advanced format sectors. My guess is that people are getting TERRIBLE transfer speeds off these things and sending good drives back as RMA's.

I'm using it as a workstation OS drive as speed is of no concern(still faster them my old 200GB pata drive).

Looks like vista and win 7 understand and use 4k sectors for file by defaults, xp and other OS's are not there yet. The Latest build of the Linux tools (parted, fdisk, etc..) work if you use the source code, but that doesn't help when installing from a Live/Install CD.

Just nabbed 2. Going to throw them in the WHS, looking into things looks like I will do the software alignment rather than the jumper method and call it good. Great timing since I have been ripping our DVD collection (uncompressed) to the server. Have a 640 Blue, 1TB Green, and just put in a 1.5TB F2 a couple weeks ago. Now more goodererness.

Thanks OP!

The WD is sold out, and Amazon has replaced it with a Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar at $69.99.

From Amazon Website:
"Due to high demand the Western Digital 1.5 TB Caviar Green SATA Hard Drive has sold out, but we have another great deal for you today. The Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar Hard Drive has huge capacity, highest 7200 RPM reliability, plus outstanding performance for desktop storage."

There are a number of reviews on newegg claiming DOA. That was a couple of months ago. How many of those were trying to run it on XP or linux without the proper alignment step I don't know...

I got one from Amazon ($99 a couple weeks ago) it was packed fine. Works well. If it ever comes up at $85 again, I say go for it.

Ordered yesterday, must've been right before they ran out (around noon est). $84.99 each, with free shipping (ordered 2). Just got an email saying it will ship sooner than expected and be here 2 April instead 8-10 April. Looking at the order now they are charging for the shipping! WTF? Anyone else get an email like this?

You failed to select the free shipping option during checkout.

Back in 'stock' at $99.99. Seems Amazon 'out of stock' often means 'sold out of the number we have at the sale price, but we have more right here for a higher price'.

Edit: I think I'm going to grab the Hitachi 1TB for a main game drive with the SSD.

My first pick was Samsung overall based on reviews, but most reviews for the Hitachi seem to indicate there won't really be a noticable difference.

It's a bit frustrating tryingn to find out about noise when reviews range from 'silent' to 'horribly noisy'.

I was going to use the WD Black 64MB, but reviews seem to say the 64MB cache doesn't help and the performance about the same, and it runs almost $50 more.

Update: after checking on FW and someone else saying theirs had shipped (free) I emailed Amazon customer service last night. Had a response within about 20 minutes that said they screwed up and a credit for the shipping would go on my CC. First time I ever had to deal with Amazon CS and it was good.

Now hopefully these HDs will be good too!
