It comes with an ULTRA ata controler card? can this work on regular ide or ata100 or ata133 as well as opposed to running it off the card they give u?

hmm.. i know that the wd's are fast.. but are these faster then 2xhd's 40gb, 2mb cache raid?? it's an old setup, thinking if it's worth the upgrade.

unless your regular ide is capable of handling over 137GB, you're most likely going to need to use the provided ATA controller card, unless u only want to use 137GB of your 200GB. more info here: http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/tp/137gb.pdf

It is a good deal....um....but $120 of rebate is kinda too much....too tempted.

I thought the larger the drive, the faster it was. Because the larger the drive the denser the platters, therefore less seek time. Maybe I'm wrong, I dont know.

The statement about hard drive size and speed has no basis in reality.

I own this drive, and it's incredibly fast. Regardless, if you're interested in the difference between a millisecond or two, you need to be budgeting more than $130 for 200 gigs of storage.

I think this is a pretty good deal, 200GB + controller card for 129 + shipping ($6-$10). No tax for me and I'm in NY (tax EVERYWHERE). Works out to be $0.69/GB.

I've been looking around at other HD deals but I'd rather have one drive with huge capactiy than 2 smaller drives - less heat, noise, and power consumption.

Besides mailing in one rebate is more convenient than having to barter with sales reps or trying to get a PM, and even then mailing in a rebate. The extra 10 bucks isn't worth the hassle.

Just a word of warning.

I purchased this drive from Frye's a few days ago. Got it installed but was having lots of trouble w/ the controller card. Finally, I just had to make it a slave on my primary IDE and it picks up the 200 gig fine (altho it has slowed my computer down considerably).

I've been trying to get this stupid controller card to work for quite awhile. And it's just not working. Any ideas would be helpful. Just thought I'd give you a heads up on any possible controller issues you guys might encounter.

ps: I'm running a 2.5g P4 on WinXP w/ SP1 and 1 gig of ram. And yes I installed the drivers that came with the WD drive. TIA

Price is now $160 AR, still a good price, just not for sure why they raised it $30. Hopefully it drops before the rebate expires, that may be enough for me not to buy it. $130 looks alot better.

Does your BIOS/MB detect the drive and it's full capacity?

I opted out of using the controller by enabling 48bit addressing in XP.

I was having speed issues when using the 100TX2 with my WD 1600 until I dumped the WD controller and used the onboard controller with my nForce2 Epox board and the above registry setting.

I have this drive and its very good. No noise, fsat etc. The controller card, to be as brief as possible, sucks. The drive alone is worth the money. I had the controller card installed but the comp got so slow that I removed it. Also my comp has no problem in recognizing the drive and I have full access to the 200gigs. Just remember, the biggest partition that you can make will ne a little less than 137gigs. I got the same deal for $30 more but it has been a 2 months since I have had this drive.
