I don't know. I have the 120 gig 8mb WD, and I love it, but I'd shy away from buying a hard drive right now, especially because serial ata drives will be popping up in the next month or so, and mobo's are already including them. just my .02

I had to send back my 100GB drive last week after it started clicking. One thing I realised was the hassle of having to backup something that size. I'd be wary of having 200GB of stuff on one drive unless I was just using it for something like video processing, or sticking in a Tivo. BTW what is it with Tivos? All the channels I watch repeat their stuff over and over and over and over and over...

Serial ATA is the new interface, as compared to the current interface of Parrallel ATA. Pop up Goggle and do a search, you'll get info.

"mobo" is the unofficial abbreviation for "motherboard".


Anyways, I recall that there will be Parrallel to Serial adaptors... or something like that.. I dunno :: shakes head ::

not necessarily...if you have a serial ATA HD, and your mobo (motheroboard ) has serial ATA connectors onboard, it can plug right into the mobo. if you have a serial ATA drive and a mobo that doesn't have the connectors, a PCI card with connectors and a serial ATA controller is needed to connect the drive to the mobo (this should be the only time a PCI card is a necessity). if you have a parallel ATA drive and a mobo w/ serial ATA connectors, there is a small device that connects to the pin array on the back of the drive from which you can then connect the serial cable to the mobo connectors...

I can't wait for serial ATA, but can anyone confirm any model of either Mobos or HDDs being distributed by anyone in the next month? I have a feeling no.

ABIT Mainboard AT7-MAX2 Has the KT400 chipset and on board serial hard drive controller (not pci) but even if it was pci, who cares, I have 6 pci slots and I aint using them all. Also comes with cables to connect your IDE hard drives through serial interface.

P.S, BobSnob, I noticed that my newest WD100 click too, but only during boot up. Wonder if I ought to consider trying to return it??

I was looking at the Western Digital website and they do not list a 200MB Special Edition hard disk drive, the only 200MB drive they list has a 2MB buffer NOT the 8MB buffer, can anyone confirm that there is a 200MB SE with 8MB buffer?

The difference between serial ATA and ATA 100 will be negligible. Eventually serial ATA will gain a speed advantage, but that will be a while. One of the pluses of serial ATA is
the smaller cable and the amount of drives that can be used simultaneously. New boards with serial ATA will almost always have IDE connectors as well.

They exist trust me I have access to distrubiter channels P/Ns are consistant WD2000BJ also WD1800BJ.

As far as these serial ATA comments, well I am a bit more skeptical. Serial ATA is currently no faster than ATA/133 due to PCI bus limitations. Serial ATA will require a redesigned power supply. In the near future I'm sure these will be resolved but today or even by the end of the year I don't see it as practical. Also your existing ATA drives are not useless there are adapters so that you can connect ATA drives to serial ATA inteface. I think these are fairly cheap because they include two of them with the Serial ATA cards.
