Remember back when a 200 MB hard drive was considered insanely huge?

I remember when a 20 MB hard drive was considered huge . Good old Seagate ST-225.

P.S, BobSnob, I noticed that my newest WD100 click too, but only during boot up. Wonder if I ought to consider trying to return it??

No, it should click on power on but you shouldn't hear a click again until you power off. Mine would click-click every hour or two during normal usage (nothing to do with power saving btw).

My 2nd WD 120GB SE has died after 3 months... clicking won't start 90% of the time. WD was good back in 1990, but they suck now. I've purchased 12 Maxtors over the past year and none of them have failed.

These reasons are good enough for me. I mean it's the phisical limitations of the HDD that are what's holding it back (access times etc...) so little things like not having to deal with ribbon cables are what's going to be so cool.

BigDaddy & mrVW,
your message(s) are scary as I recently got in on one of the WD1200 8Mb drives from Dell as listed on AT/Hot Deals.

This is the drive I've started using for backup. Too bad there is not an Icon for Worried!

Funny thing, I've just gotten a new D540X and it seems faster then the WD1200. However, I've not tested 'em. Makes no sense, of course.

I had a Maxtor 80GB. After about 3 month of clicking sound, the hard drive die on me.

One more thing. I don't know if this happen to WD hard drive, but for Maxtor, if you fill the hard drive up with files and have less than a gig left, you'll start to have problem with it. So, if you have a Maxtor, just make sure you leave about a couple of GB of space open and don't fill it up or else you'll start having problem with it. It problem happen to me and my friend.

It is normal for most hard drive compaines to replace die drive with a refurbish drive.

BTW, I think most click of death comes from fill up the drive.

I think Moore's law is also doubling the # of transistors every 18 months (1 1/2 years). Even if this applied to storage, it would be 10years/1.5 years= 6.7, approximately. 2^6.7=104
104 x 200 MB is only around 20 GB
