Anyone have any experiences good or bad with the WD300ABRTL drive? It's 30GB 5,400rpm 2MB buffer. Doing a cheap upgrade for a friend and want to hear opinions on the drive. TIA.

Well, I don't have that model, but I do have 2 other western digitals...

Both are 7200 RPM. One's being RMA'd though. Died on me

I have a 40 gig model and a 60 gig model. Both are really fast and nice drives, except the one proved unreliable after dying on me in less than a year

I don't know. Western Digitals IMHO are good drives if taken care of. Mine probably got too hot at some point

Anyways, I think your friend would like it, and it is a cheap and nice upgrade.

I've never had that particular model, but I've been quite pleased with all the Western Digitals I've owned in previous years. I've only had one (of about 30) go bad on me, and that was after about 3-4 years of heavy use. Their prices are pretty decent too.

My dad used an old 2GB WD drive in an old computer he built for our church. I have a 6 and 15 giger running in this system. And I put in a 20GB drive in the church's new computer back in March. And they all have worked perfectly.

Fun fact: The 2GB drive outlasted the mobo's controller.

I have one 30 gig on here and it runs beautifully so far. It is the 7200 rpm model though. I get 16500 on an older 20 gig in Sandra and 22000 on the 30 gig. Both are 7200 rpm, not real world benches but you get the idea.

I have the 30 GB 7200 RPM version and it's been running great since November (knocks on wood). Maxes out my ATA33 mobo nicely.

I've used WD for almost 10 years with hardly any problems. 40 Megabyte to 40 Gigabyte. Very reliable.

WD isnt a "bad" company like fijusti.

I dunno, WD is on my poop list for being error prone... but IBM is not and a lot of people think it is.

Well well well....Looks like I'm the only one who has one of these.
Purchased it retail at Best Buy for $99.99 about 3 months ago.
Installed easily, been running great..........
One obscure thing though.....For some reason WD only gives a 1 yr
warranty for the retail box (30gig, single platter).
When you get home and open the box there's a coupon inviting you
to extend the warranty to 3 yrs for $10.....What the heck, I did.

That's kinda bizarre. I just bought a WD 30GB 7200RPM OEM drive from Mwave and when I went to WD's site and plugged in my serial # to check warranty, I had 3 years.

40gb 7200 rpm version here, got it about two months ago for more capacity on my p450, going to use it on my new 1.4ghz athlon system, no reason to get another, although I will most likely buy another 40gb wd drive to raid them. runs fine, no problems, no complaints, perfect basicaly...
