Why would anyone get a Raptor over a SCSI drive?

SCSI HDDs are cheaper per gigabyte (than a Raptor), and they're up to 50% faster. Seagate recently announced their 15,000RPM SCSI drive. I think I'm going to get a SCSI card, and one of those Seagates. *shrug*

I've got the 74GB Raptor & it's very quiet & obviously extremely fast.

I've got my OS on there & a few games. Load times are almost nonexistant. I've had this drive going on almost 2 years now. Hasn't given me a bit of trouble.

scsi = heat

that's an awesome price on the raptor! 36gb is what I run my os and apps on.
games are bf2, mohaa series and doom3+ROE. I just uninstall the games as I'm done with them and if I don't like the multiplayer - I'll uninstall and sell doom3/roe when I'm done.

my 36gb has been running awesome for 2yrs. and it's way quiet...no high pitched whining like some used to. I keep a 92mm fan blowing down on it and a 120mm in front of it. Both fans are on a fan controller.

yeah, 36gb is good enough for the os but get a 250gb sataII 7200rpm as storage and you're golden.

or wait for a good deal on a 74gb Raptor...

they're way worth it.

Actually, there are several different models for 36GB raptor. I think there are 4 variaties, and distinguished by serial number (ex. WD360GD-00FNA0 or -50GHA0). WD360GB-50GHA2 is the one you might want to find, and it's supposed to have exact same performance as 74GB raptor. The rest of 36GB raptors are not that great, of course better than average 7200RPM HDDs, but not that much. (I know this cuz I am using one of slower 36GB raptors, and fairly faster 7200RPM HDDs)

That's the easiest question I've had all day. Since I'm buying for my workstation (read: not server) I don't want to spend a fortune for fast drives and then have to wait another 20 seconds or so every time I bootup for the SCSI BIOS to load.

Granted - server no problem going SCSI. Workstation, no way. I've got one rig with 36x2 RAID0, and my main rig 74x2 RAID0. Let me just say you've never known speed like this.
