Re. this drive versus the Seagate. Most everyone agrees that this drive beats the Seagate in the areas of noise and heat output. It also seems to me that I've heard far fewer complaints of the WDs failing as opposed to the Seagate 7200.10.

I know of no comparison tests between the WD 5000AAKS and the Seagate 7200.10 500 GB, so it's anybody's guess which of the drives is faster. Of course, in the real world it wouldn't be noticeable anyway.

Tom's Hardware HD comparison chart shows the Seagate a hair faster in most benchmarks. The WD runs slightly hotter, but is probably quieter. My 7200.10 is louder than all of the WD's I own. Here's the report.

The problem is that Tom's Hardware is showing data for the older four platter wd5000ks model. The newer "aaks" model has three platters.
