Should I opt for the WD800BB HD or the IBM Deskstar 120 GXP, both at 80 GBs and 7200 rpm, and i can get the IBM for 20 bucks less...

(even though it's a bit extra $, it's worth it.)

Why is that ? I can get the JB 80 GB for 10 bucks more. What do I gain by splashing out another 10 bucks ?Originally posted by: Ionizer86 WD800JB! (even though it's a bit extra $, it's worth it.)

The 10 bucks more gets you extra memory cache on the hard drive (8 megs total). This increases the performance of the drive close to SCSI levels. I have the 120gig 8-meg western digital hard drive, and it is great!
I suggest spending the 10 extra bucks, it is well worth it.

Yes, some of the IBM 60GXP drives died early in their lives. But, overall, IBM makes very reliable drives and that's why they're the prefered disk drive vendor for both Sun and IBM UNIX servers. In my 20+ year technology career, I have had to replace more failed Western Digital drives than all other brands combined. Sure, the WD drive you are considering is a better performer due to the large cache, but do you want to spend more money for less reliability? I doubt that I would install a WD drive even if they gave it to me for free. I've just had way too many problems.
