What are people's opinions on Western Digital hard drives compared to IBM's?

IBM's are usually faster, and in the past have been arguably more reliable.
Both are excellent at taking out of spec PCI bus speeds.

I'd vote WD. Mainly because after the ridiculously high RMA rates of IBM's 75GXP line I've lost a lot of faith in them. And I've seen a few 60GXP's go back for RMA already also....

If IBM would wake up and fix whatever serious issues they had with the 75GXP I would unhesitatingly recommend them. But as is, I say WD is a nice choice and the WD BB series Hard Drives arent far behind the 60GXP's in performance.

I like western digital BB series (have the 60GB one) more than my 40GB 60GXP (first one arrived DOA, probalby neweggs crappy packing) second one is fine but its louder than the BB. Can't really tell the difference in speeds. They would both just be storage drives for me, i boot off a 10K SCSI HD

I'd have to go for IBM (I have a 60GXP 40 gigger, and I love it Also, I'd consider Maxtor to be above WD, simply because I've had too many WD's die on me in past years to ever go back to them. If you've got the money, and you're looking for the ultimate HD though, you should look at the 10k or 15k Seagate drives. If you're looking for the best price/performance/reliability, I'd have to say IBM all the way.

Why exactly do you love it? I have a 60GXP, too...I probably won't fall in love with it until maybe it goes for at least a year or two without any knocking, crashing or bad sectors.
Sure, I like the performance and it is quiet...but let that drive crash and who really gives a sh*t about how quiet and fast it once WAS.

My point is if that reliability should be at the TOP TOP TOP of everyone's list when it comes to evaluating any hard drive.

How does combining Maxtor and IBM Hd's together give problems?
I have a 45GB Maxtor right now and plan to buy a 40gb 60gxp HD in the near future, probably next week.
What should be my main concern?

My last two drives have been IBMs, and they've worked very well for me so far. (I've only had my 60GXP for a few weeks, but my other is over three years old.) My WD drives were never this reliable; I had three of those "take a vacation" on me.

I vote for Western Digital. IBM may be faster and more quiet, but I like reliability. From what I've read here some of that has gone from IBM hd's. Of course every company screws up every now and then. As far as Maxtors go, I use them at work and have been very pleased so far. If I were to buy another Maxtor though I would open it up right at the store to make sure they didn't stick a Quantum in the box. Although I'm sure Quantum's are probably good too. I'll just wait for the next guy to say that he has used Quantums for 50 years and never had a problem.

I vote for IBM. Just because they had a defective line doesn't mean their drives NOW aren't good. Western Digital had their days too. But on fast and quality it's straight up Ibm. I seen more WD's die then Ibms in the past 3 years.

All the current IDE hard drives are about the same in specs and performance (IMHO), so the thing you need to look at the most is reliability (or price ).

In terms of reliability, here's what I rank the companies from best to worst:

1. Maxtor - The new DiamondMax 60 line is very well made, and Maxtor is excellent with their Customer Service. Only a couple of drives ever died on me....but that was sorta an user error.

2. Western Digital - The "BB" drives are good, I've had only a few die on me before, and they replaced it quickly.

3. IBM - The 75GXP line made a bad name for them in terms of reliability. The 60GXP line is currently showing some signs of the 75GXP...lots of RMA's.

4. Seagate - They should stick to SCSI.

Once again, this is my opinion only and based on the numerous IDE drives I've tested and used before.

Enjoy.

I personally choose maxtor. I got a couple maxtor hard drives over 3-4 years ago and it's still running without any problems. However, if i had to choose between WD and IBM, i'd choose WD because i've heard some bad things about some of their hard drives (failing alot) but i could be wrong.
