I am really disappointed at those 3TB drives... what the hell were they thinking with the 512B sectors? the only thing that is good for is winXP compatibility... and some partitioning tools.
But winXP cannot use drives over 2.2TB anyways.
Because of their stupid implementation they need special expansion cards for use in even a modern OS... they should have just exposed 4kb sectors to the OS and be done with it. Instead we get even more problems than the 2TB drives with 4kb sectors had.
You forget that most BIOSs don't yet support 4k logical sectors, and wouldn't be able to boot such a drive.
Also remember that some apps may rely on the underlying logical sector size for correct operation (e.g. those that do low-level disk access due to a need for specific disk access strategies - e.g. big-iron SQL databases) - and that these need to be very carefully validated.
The agreement at the IDEMA (international drive equipment and materials association) meetings was that the 4 kB sectors would only be exposed after a 2-3 year emulation period, which would give enough time for BIOSs, OSs, apps, etc. to be updated, or to fall out of use. Then, manufacturers could start to release 4 k logical drives, initially enterprise SAS drives, and then later SATA.
