comon think guys...there's gotttta be some way to get this drive cheaper than this... a pricematch or a hidden MIR or Something....
I guess I'm still riding high after the 3 units of this drive I picked up for 30 bucks a piece a couple months ago (remember the Microcenter/Bestbuy thing?). That was a lot of work, but well worth it. It just seems like there's gotta be a way for a repeat..somehow someway =)

According to the style number 531043, these seem to be the 2MB buffer versions (1200BBRTL) according to other sites I checked.

for 180 regular you would think it would be the JB (8 mb SE)

One would think so, but that's OM's regular catalog price for a 2MB. And the 8MB is only suppose to be a $20 premium. So there's no guarantee that this is an 8MB.

Yeah, pretty sure that this one is the 2mb version, that and i think most retailers have the 120 jb for 200

Anyone get one yet to confirm the buffer size? Are we talking 2MB or 8MB here?

I just called Officemax and it looks like it is the 2mb. She could not confirm though.

I will check tomorrow, when I receive it. If it is not the 8mb, we can return it to OfficeMax with no penalties, they will even have UPS pick it up.

Well for base storage, such as MP3 files or data backups the 6MB difference should not matter. If this was going to be a boot drive, 8MB would be nice though! Even if it is the 2MB version, I just might go for it - my 60GB Baracuda IV is getting a bit crowded right now...

This is the 2MB version, OfficeMax has never sold a 8MB version of the WD hard drives, that 3yr warranty mention on thier web site doesn't mean a thing, the last time 2 WD hard drive I got from OfficeMax came with a 1yr warranty.

BTY : I added a couple of FAR item (a caller ID box and a corded phone) to my order and used the $40 off $200 OM coupon to get the total down to $90 after rebate.

I'm pretty sure this is the 2MB version as Officemax don't carry the new 8MB SE's.

Besides the size of the buffer (2MB vs. 8MB) is there any other differences between the model at OM and the newer, 8MB SEs?

I think that the warranty is better 3yr vs 1yr. Not sure on anything else... Can anyone confirm this?

Well, it looks like you can no longer order this directly from OfficeMax.com

You can still search for it and it will show the WD 120GB drive, but when you try to add it to your cart it says "GenericTable data not found
Product 20148555 available in retail stores only"

I have confirmed that they will still let you order it over the phone, however. Only problem is that you lose out on the 4% Ebates. As stated previously, you can use the online coupons over the phone. I went ahead and picked up the drive anyway. I am completely out of space and can't wait any longer...

Well, I just got my drive in and guess what!? There is a little pink slip in the box that says "ADDED BONUS: You have just received a higher performance hard drive at no extra cost! The drive you have received is a Western Digital Special Edition hard drive which features an 8 MB cache buffer."

So for all you people who took a chance or just couldn't wait any longer to a new HD, you should have a surprise waiting for you when you open the box. (Or no surprise if you actually read this post )

It wasn't online when I tried to order either. I just called up their 1-800 number and gave the woman the item number. I no longer have the item number but the SKU is 20148555. The rebate is valid til 12/7/02 and you can still use the $30 of $150 coupon over the phone. Good luck!
