It's been down to $1000 for awhile and I even saw it dip to $980 recently on Newegg. However, at that time, shipping was around $100 and now it's around $60. So, I would say this is a solid deal.

If you sit your normal distance you should be ok.. you may need to stick it back a tad more than your standard 17-22" monitor, but i had the 40" Samsung briefly (it was defective and i decided to wait for prices on these guys to drop after I had my money back 2.5k at the time for a defective 40" 1080p vs. 37" for 1k... hmm lol)

I would say I sat ~3ft back from the 40" so that should give you a sense of it.

Yes, you understood my question. Just wanted to know a comfortable viewing distance fpr PC work. I knew the 12 inches of distance I currently use would be a bit too close.

May as well wait for the new models now. Given all the firmware issues, user upgrades via USB will be a major improvement on its own before even considering IQ &c.

I finally pulled the trigger on this display after lusting after it for months. Didn't get the best deal (paid $1100 shipped about 2 months ago) but it is absolutely the best tech purchase I ever made (and I was a long-time LCD user). CS:S in 37" of 1920x1080 goodness is much goodness. Don't be put off by the fact that smaller (e.g., 24") LCDs have the same resolution -- unless you press your nose to the screen it won't look grainy. Incredible PC monitor, plus a 1080p HDTV and gaming console to boot.

I'm very tempted myself. The only thing stopping me is the contrast ratio. I really need a LCD, plasma, etc., for a primary HDTV more. If I really needed a PC monitor, this is a steal.

I got one of these back in the Crutchfield 999.99 no ship deal and I have to say it is by far the best purchase I have ever made. Is it overkill for a desktop monitor? Yes. Is it totally freaking awesome anyway? You decide.
