In defense of Westinghouse, it's a monitor with tons of inputs, not a tv. With no tuner, most signals are displayed raw with no filtering or conversion other than filling the screen. With the proper source(HD signals or 1080p from a PC) this display can look really good. Standard def TV doesn't look as good as other LCDs

You just have to be aware what your buying and do the research.

My 32" Westinghouse has been an excellent performer. After some proper adjustments, the brightness and backlight are dialed very low. There is plenty of brightness to spare. I have no experience with the 42", but I doubt it can be that bad. I use a HTPC btw.

shorunner i dont own one, nor do i own the other ones but i do work around the 40" sony xbr2s and the new samsung 4095 that blow that tv/monitor away. sure they are more money, but also a better name brand. all of the tvs are set to "vivid" in the picture menus. (all you tv nerds like to play with settings, so there you go they are all the same). the westinghouse is even hooked up through component video (thanks to the lack of atsc tuner) and it still does not even come close to the sony or the samsung.

thank you shorunner, think before you open your mouth, thank you.

I'm returning my 40" 720p SONY to Costco that I just bought as soon as this arrives. I have to go pickup the receiver and speakers at the local Best Buy to save me $20 in shipping.

It's a great deal on a great budget HDTV. Does it have the picture quality of a Panasonic or Pioneer? Maybe not. But those TVs are also over $1000 more.

For great bang-for-your-buck, Westinghouses are hard to beat.

Including myself.

I owned a Westinghouse 32" LCD 720p and it was awesome. The other major brands started at $1299 and my Westy was $809 after coupon.

LOL, they should advertise that as a feature because most people think that LCDs are too bright and turn down the brightness/contrast.

I saw the deal but didn't see the "free" Philips DVD/DiVX surround sound system. Too bad I can't hook it up into my normal stereo - no audio outputs. Then again, maybe I can do away with the normal stereo because this has two inputs.

I am using this monitor right now. It is EXCELLENT! 1080p LCD monitor with all the bells and whistles with the exception of a tuner. Thats what DVRs are for anyways. Great price!

I looked at this in BB a week ago in comparison to a Samsung and the Samsung looked a lot better (40" 1080p too). Of course the Samsung was 1k more. Colors didn't look as good on the Westinghouse, no matter how much I tweaked the settings to try to make it closer to the Samsung.

lol Snakexor doesn't even own one. You gotta know your stuff before you run your mouth. First of all, how can anyone complain about a panel being "too dark"? All of the flat panels out there, after proper calibration, should have backlight and possibly brightness turned way down. That claim of Westinghouse being "10db-20db too dark" is absolute BS. Use the proper units at least. In fact, most critics would complain about the blacks if anything.

For some reason, there is alway 1 or 2 that dislikes Westinghouse simply because they've never heard of Westinghouse. If you get out more, you'd probably know Westinghouse is now a powerhouse in LCDs. What does "better name brand" have to do with IQ? LOL Chi-Mei is known to have great IQ with incredible price.

I think part of what he's complaining about is that this doesn't have as high contrast as the more expensive sets. The Samsung I was comparing it with had 6000:1 contrast version 1000:1 on this one. Higher contrast means darker darks, but also the brights will look comparatively "brighter" since there's more variance betweent he two. I own a 19" widescreen Westinghouse monitor and I wouldn't complain that they aren't bright enough. It's about the same as a Dell Ultrasharp in that regard... Contrast is a different issue though.

Are you sure the Samsung you were looking at was an LCD and not a plasma? 6000:1 sounds more in line with plasma screens, which will have much better contrast and possibly better colors.

I'm gonna head over to BestBuy in a couple of hours to look some more.

Er... wouldn't that be TOO dumb, rather than TO (or TWO) dumb?
