I saw this monitor at a dealership waiting room. The cable signal wasn't even digital. What a waste... Does this TV upconvert lesser digital signals?

This display shows everything at 1080p, so yes, it was being upscaled. Can't polish a turd, though.

Umm since when does everything get converted to 1080p on this monitor? Youre incorrect. So if i play a DVD from my player, its going to go straight to 1080p? Again, youre INCORRECT. I have the 47" model as well as the 42" Westinghouse and neither one upconverts. Get your facts straight before posting misinformation.

You need an upconverting DVD player to get 1080p...Xbox 360 with firmware update upconverts to 1080p... Blue ray is 1080p

Regular cable/sat/sd programming is NOT upconverted.

I believe he was jumping the gun. The lower resolution stuff is not upconverted, but rather scaled to 1080P. That's why some people complain that lower definition stuff looks weird on the screen.

Semantics. Scaling converts from resolution A to resolution B. If resolution B is greater than A, then the scaling is "converting up" -- or upconverting -- the resolution. The 37W3 is a 1080P panel, thus everything must be upconverted (or "scaled", if you prefer that term) to 1080P. Naturally, converting 480i to 1080p will produce inferior results to scaling 1080i (or even 480p) to 1080p.

So yes, if you view a DVD on the 37W3 it is being displayed at 1080p after being upconverted/scaled by the monitor's processing circuits.

Now, the 37W3's processing may be inferior to that of a standalone scaling/upconverting DVD player -- such as the Oppo 971 or 970 -- but that does not mean that the 37W3 is not upconverting non-1080P signals.

Thanks OP. I'm going to think about this one even though I was looking for something a little bigger.

Thanks. Exactly why I used the word upscale.

Yeah it comes off. I couldnt find it in the manual either. Here are the basic steps. In hindsight I could have done it in much fewer steps and less of a pain.

1. There are 4 screws on the backside. 2 on each side of the center area with all of the connections, they are vertical. They line up with the edges of the smoky plastic section in the front. Basically two rods come up from the stand and that is where they screw in. Take those 4 screws out and you are money.

When I did I basically ended up taking the whole stand apart trying to figure it out. Good luck to you.

People had shipping problems with another recent Buy.com HDTV deal.

Mine is also at "sent to warehouse" now... I emailed CS a while back and this is the reply:

The USPS tracking number states: Your item arrived at a shipping partner facility at 7:01 AM on December 29, 2006 in HEBRON, KY 41048. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.

So my guess from that somewhat weird email is that they just got a shipment of these from Westinghouse? and will ship out after the long weekend. I'm crossing my fingers since they already charged my CC..

Thanks man. I was figuring it was something like that. I just wanted to ask and save myself some time if someone else could clue me in. Surprised it's not in the manual.

I just got it today It is absolutely gorgeous! It's soooo much bigger then I thought it was going to be. I can't wait to get this thing on to my main computer at school and start playing some games and watching some quality HDTV. I'll post pictures and such when I get is all set up.

Oh and I'm running this off my laptop right now. No dead pixels or anything and DVI is working very well.

awesome. glad to hear.
i want one so bad but most places outta stock and the places that do have stock the price is little too high for my taste since people were getting it for well under 1k.

theres a rumor that it's discontinued. i hope that's not true. 37 is a perfect size for me.

I got in on the $999 deal from Crutchfield a few weeks back. I have it set up as a PC monitor - would buy another ones of these again no question!! Picture is amazing (1080p is great as a pc monitor)! I am now building a new PC to run it so I can really see what it can do!!!

I have had the 37" 1080P Westinghouse since Aug 2005 and love it as my main monitor for PC/TV/XBOX 360 gaming. Its the center point of the media experience, Only thing I want now is the 47" model as I paid as much for the 37" that you can get the 47" now
