I did a quick any dirty overclock, just raised bck to 166 MHz. Got a lower cinebench score and only cpuz recognized the higher clocks. Any ideas?

Yes, the first thing you have to do is get Windows to see the extra 2 cores. Type msconfig & go to boot, advanced options, number of processors, uncheck and reboot so it will come back with 12 instead of 8.. Run Cinebench again

Dont shoot for this initially. I feel I got a lucky chip but you can work your way up with the settings to see what you can hit. I'm running a H100i Cooler.

Your tips worked and the faster clocks are working now.

Was able to overclock to 200 blck with turbo off using only +240mv volts. Seems stable, will run some more stability tests.

Trinamo, what memory ware you using? I am looking to get some 4GB dimms to replace the 2GB ones I'm using right now.

I currently have a AMD athlon X4 651k @3.4GHz that isn't cutting it anymore. I'm looking for a fun project to do that will also give some cpu performance gains on the cheap. So I was thinking of getting a x58 board off ebay and a 6 core xeon. I'm not sure about cpu compatibility though and was wondering if any forum member could help with finding a board/cpu combo that will work. Budget ~$200 Thanks in advance!

So other than the extra I7 920 cpu cost, the "project" is a success? Happy with results?

Ya this was a fun project! Couple scary times (though i messed up the bios upgrade), but it went pretty smoothly. After I sell my old motherboard and cpu the net cost will probably be around $100. i7 will probably go back on ebay.

Old system had 350 cinebench, new has 850! Games are no longer cpu limited as well!

Thanks for all the help

Congrats on the "new" x58 build. Still a good solution.

Everything was going great with my build until i got the urge to squeeze some more performance out of my ram yesterday. I guess I didn't add enough voltage and now my system won't POST. I tried resetting the CMOS with the battery and the jumpers, but it still won't turn on. Any suggestions? I really hope I didn't brick the board.

Thanks

Is there a jumper on the board? Strip down to bare essentials, board, cpu, ram, video, and a known good PS.
Try again..

Wow... that sux.. Hard to believe a memory volt adjust caused it to die.. You sure about the power supply?

I didn't touch the voltage. I'm not 100% on the power supply, but it was working perfectly fine yesterday. Ill try another. It seems like the CMOS is just not resetting.

That's a good sign.. There's a clear cmos jumper, directly next to the reset button on the mother board. Clear cmos.. Re-install memory & try again.

so the board is working.

when you reset the cmos did you disconnect the power?
Here the procedure I took.

First I tried doing it with the battery. I took the cmos battery out, unplugged the pc and discharged the power in the capacitors using the power button. Then I waited 5 minutes,

After that didn't work I unplugged the PC, discharged the power and moved the jumper. Then I plugged in the AC power and moved the jumper back to the original position after 10 seconds. Still didn't post.
