My house and garage get tons of sun. Would love to do this but snow and hail would pretty much put a quick end to them.

Actually I'd be curious to know as well, how you deal with snow, do you have to constantly go shovel it off? Are the solar panels strong enough to witstand hail, or even walking on them? Do you still need to redo the shingles every 25 years?

very cool, I'm jealous! Our next home will be solar with thermal as well as PV. I'm a little too underemployed right now to get a loan, unfortunately.

I would be interested to know this as well.

Three options, the buyer could take over the contract assuming they meet credit requirements (750+). We could include it in the cost of the house to pay of lease. Finally we could opt to have it installed at the new place.

We havea tile roof, not sure what the life of that is, but when the lease is up we can end it or choose to upgrade. If we end it they restore the roof back to its original condition.

The inverter has a kill switch on it plus first solar would get notification of an issue right away.

is this silicon rigid panel I assume? what company?

Thin film from First Solar.

Did you factor in lower cooling bills in your calcs?

Yes that is factored in. We did get a lot of efficiency upgrades on the house to make it more efficient. This is just the next thing.

I want soy based spray foam someday.

SunSamurai Pix of your neighbors hot wife topless or this whole thing is a sham!

You want pics of your mom? ewww

Wow you definitely need some safety in there - diode failures with inverters are fairly common and then it goes POOF! Except during the day it won't stop pooing!

You could always throw a large blanket over the panels.

These run at above line voltage too so there is a shock hazard if water is tossed on the wiring when the Sun's out.

Sounds like they need a POSITIVE manual disconnect like a latching main switch on the roof that is tripped with air. A hose runs down inside the house with a squeeze bulb - pipe it in several places so one has access to it. Squeezing it sends a pulse of air to the switch latching it OFF. The only way to reset is to go on the roof and reset it with a wrench.

Adul, by leasing, do you have any issues with having to cover damages caused by nature? In other words, if you get a big old hail storm that pounds the panels half to death, or a wind storm tears them up, does the leasing company come fix them, or does it have to be covered by your home owner's policy?

I'm in north Texas, beginning of tornado alley, and while we don't see as much activity as, say, Oklahoma and points further north, we have had some hail storms and straight line winds that were pretty hairy!

I'd be interested in finding out, too, how often they'd check to see if one of the panels is not functioning correctly, or has dropped off in efficiency? Is that something your monitoring system checks? And how bad off does a panel have to be before they come out and replace it? Also, do the panels need to be washed down from time to time, to keep dust/grime build up from lowering the efficiency?

I'm a first time home owner (just closed 3 weeks ago! :awe: ), and this sort of system, with the lease, interests me.

I would assume that it would be a good idea to wash the panels once in a while. Certainly wouldn't hurt anything.

I think I'm having almost as fun watching your output as you probably are.

Very cool stuff. I would love to be able to have 31kWh of solar electricity a day.. That would be awesome...

One day I hope to see every new home will have roofing made of solar panels that look just like standard roofing. The keep improving the power gained and resilience all the time. I think I much rather have this than wind. Far more reliable.

The panels could be coated to prevent bad stuff from sticking. If you have pigeons you could use some power to run a fence charger (or use a stand alone solar powered one!) to keep a raised wire pair charged up. They will try to land and get shocked so they will fly away and poop elsewhere like on the neighbor's car/driveway. Be careful if you neighbor is a douchenozzle - you may need a lawyer!

Hailstorms can be an issue in the South where stones can impact up to 100mph and be grapefruit sized! If the protective window is similar to a skylight and made of UV resistant Lexan, for example it should be fine. (that will take more abuse than the roof itself!)

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm terrible understanding KWH. Is 31 kwh basically able to power a 1300 watt home 24/7, assuming batteries etc
