I have a friend who I built a system and OC'd a T'bred B 1700+ to 2600+ speeds and he wants a new video card but is unwilling to spend much more than $100 for a new Video card (his old one can't play any relatively newer 3D games - it's a Vanta 16MB). I have tried to convince him that at this point, the best bang for his buck would be in the price range of twice taht with a 9800 pro, considereing image quality and DX9 support would probably be best for someone that holds on to older hardware and hardly upgrades. At this point I think he wants to just be able to play his Rainbow Six 3 Raven Shield game (I don't think he understands what a good video card can do on his Sony Trinitron 19" monitor because he is a rabid console freak and is used to crappy TV resolutions). I know this questions been beaten to death, but I can't seem to find a good answer amongt the flame wars that ATI vs nVidia start in some threads. I suppose for the image quality, I would be leaning towards ATI but I figure if he's going to set his limit at approxiamtely $100, then maybe getting an older DX8 card is worth his while (like a GF3 or GF4) for now (as that could possibly be cheaper). I read somewhere around here that basically either you go for the $200 range or just spend $50 on something and wait for a while. That seems to make sense, although I wold like to unleash the 3D capabilities of his system on his monitor (which has alwys been used for 2D) at probably 1280x1024-1040 with all the settings more or less maxed. Either way, I guess he'll at least be able to play his game. Sorry, but I haven't kept up with the video card market since the release of the 9700 pro (which still looks good ut is probably out of his price range). Thanks in advance.
