Stop this automatic transmission nonsense.

if reliability is your utmost concern get an small import from Japan, and I'll hear no other: corolla, sentra, etc.

And just for your reading enjoyment...as I was walking through the parking lot at school today I saw a nissan with a sticker in the window that said "4DSC"...I looked closer and under the "4DSC" it said "Four door sports car."

hahaha, lame!

For reliability, get not the Civic, but the Accord. Or any Toyota. Or Subaru.

Just try to find one from a private party that's in the best shape that you can find. Maint. records from the dealership are a major plus because it tells you that the owner was a freak about taking good care of it.

Hey, my mom drives one of those. She loves it. It's a 92 Maxima SE 5 speed.

I'm just browsing my local newspaper. Geo Prizms are dirt cheap. Like a 99 for $5000 kind of cheap. That's basically a Toyota Corolla under the skin and I think it looks better too. You should be able to find a 96 Accord EX or 97 Accord LX for less than $8000. Perhaps a 96 Camry for well under $8000, but they're so bland.

Personally, I think Accords are the best 4 door cars out there for their overall mix of value, dependability, longevity, economy, and quality. They're far and away #1 in end user sales for a reason. No you crappers, before you start, I'm not brainwashed. I happen to have a lot of experience with a lot of different cars.

Thought you'd be interested to know, there is a 93 BMW 3something in there with like 125,000 miles for $7000.

EDIT: Oops! That Bimmer in the paper is actually a 93 318 (HB, if I'm not mistaken) with 115,000 for $6100.

Also forgot to look at Maximas in the paper. Don't even bother with an Accord V6 when you can get a Maxima. The Pre 98 V6 Accords aren't much faster except in gas suckage. I wouldn't say the car is better than an Accord or Camry, but the engine sure is. You're probably looking at a about a 95-96.

I'm also looking into buying a new car - this weekend actually.

To me the most important thing would be knowing that I would not have any probs for the next 3 years. This is pretty difficult with any second hand car so I decided to go new.

My local Nissan dealer has a basic sentra for $9999. This is manual for another $800 I can wsitch out to an auto transmission. Anyway for a brand new car with a full warrantee this seems better to me than the extra leather seats for a fancier second-hand car. It is almost impossible to tell the history of a used car.

Anyway I would suggest that you look into a cheap new car instead. I have seen a few Ford Focus cars for under $10k. Also the Kia can be snagged for less than $10k.

Before I got my current car I had a 95 Mazda Millenia S. Near luxury car (in 95 it beat out the BMW 3 series, Acura, Merc. C230 and Lexus) to win in a comparison. They're dirt cheap, and the S (supercharged model) is 210 hp. Not the best handling car in the world, but it only depreciated like mad because it's a Mazda and nobody wants to buy them.

Check it out.

For a little more you could get a brand new Kia Rio. Its definetly basic transportation, but you get a 100K warranty on the engine/tranny - something to think about...

An early 4th generation Maxima (1995-1999) even fully loaded it should be just a hair over 8K for a '95.

I second that. I'd go for something with visual blemishes. For the same price, you can get something with a bit of dents, scrapes and stuff thats in better mechanical condition.
