My current tablet died last night (battery will no longer hold a charge; was fine the day before); so looking for a replacement. I use it mostly for playing videos off of sd at night, web browsing and light gaming (sorry apple you chose to not support sd cards).
-
Seems like most of the 8 inch tablets I found (usa) are crap but maybe i missed something decent ?
-
What i've seen are s2 (weird form factor terrible battery); leveno tab 4 plus (us version 2gb/16gb but seems like best option so far); asus zen - bit dated; yoga 3 weird form factor for travel; tab a (under powered); media tab 3 - weird os; fire hd 8 - slow and amazon locked; ....
-
Anything better than the leveno tab 4 or something new in the next few months (announced but not released) ?
-
Seems like acer and others are pulling out of the market and as always google products doesn't support sd card.

I think the last decent android tablet that had a great form factor was the Galaxy Pro 8.4. Too bad samsung never updated the OS or product line.

Yea. If the 8.4 was 'new' i would go with that one. The problem is that the battery is a little small and most of them are several year old stock so a bit dated (no more updates; older technology).

Received the Tab 4 plus. It is similar to same size as samsung 8.4 but has ips screen. My previous tablet was dell venue which was oled (hard to get used to the ips screen at night; also the screen is a little smaller than the dell which had almost no bazel on the side. Can't say it feel much faster (almost slower) than the intel atom in the dell but otherwise seems nice and has a good feel. The speaker on this thing is awesome - way better than my note 4 and dell tablet.

I've used the Huawei Mediapad M3 for most of the the past year. It's a good replacement for my 2013 Nexus 7 for my primary uses (web/email, lots of video, and some gaming). The CPU is surprisingly capable, at least when comparing Bloons TD5 performance on it and my Nexus 6P--the 6P chugs and drops frames like mad while it's never managed to slow down the Mediapad at all. The only drawback for me is that the Mediapad inexplicably doesn't support 5GHz wi-fi. MIUI is different but doesn't get in the way and it's already been updated to Nougat, much to my surprise.

To be fair, the 6P had the overheating mess of a Snapdragon 810. Frankly, a lower powered CPU that didn't overheat would do better in a sustained situation (like round 200 of endless).

Good to know. I knew the 810 had issues but never ran into them until Bloons making it choke. Maybe I'm oblivious to lags and micro-stutters but I've never noticed them in my everyday use and the phone's generally been smooth for me.

I passed on the mediapad because of some funky ness claimed by others with the os as well as security concerns. To be honest I'm not that hot about the tab 4; and prefer the 3 year old dell. There are a few issues:
a) it is 8inch and not 8.4 inch
b) the 625/storage while not molasses is just not that snappy.
c) I'd forgotten about ips glow and will never buy an ips device again (other than monitor which which currently don't have oled solutions).
-
On the positive it was cheap, is well built and has current software (android 7.1).
-
I think if I had to do it again I would consider the asus which I think is oled but to be honest there just isn't a lot available in 8 (or 8.4) inches this year. Maybe next year or maybe we've reached the end for the 8inchers.
