What a joke, ATI and Nvida expect us to buy separate PSUs for G80 and R600

Looks like I'll be going mainstream for the DX10 round. But we shall see.

Maybe for SLI or crossfire but I don't see it as necessary. Just more marketing BS. Surprise, surprise, OCZ is leading the charge

300W video card. Meh... you don't have to buy it. There are lots of dumb items out there for the sole reason that there are dumb people who buy them. I personally find it reasonable - plausible, rather, not reasonable - that ATI/nV would up the stakes to 300W, since there is a really big e-penis factor involved with having the biggest card. I just hope consumers wise up that this stuff is in no way justified.

PS - I'm not saying that all high-end hardware is dumb. I am very hapy with my dual-core proc and X1800XT

BTW Frackal: the article mentions that there's an R580+ on the way, you might want to hold on the xtx

For one I thought that the DX10 cards where supposted to be more efiecint than the last cards? I also hope that the consumer knows there is a difference between a $50 700watt power supply and a $200 700watt power supply.

I know, supposedly it will be 700mhz core and GDDR4... Mikeshardware has it coming it out Aug/Sept though so I probably won't wait. I should be able to get around 730/840 with an XTX now and say R580+ hits 800/1000 it may not be enough to wait 3+ months for

i like how the videocard sucks down far more power than the rest of the system these days.

are external power bricks just not good enough? frankly i think i'd rather have that than another heat producer INSIDE my computer.

Looks like I'll be upgrading to a 7950GX2 or R580+ and then holding off for awhile until things get back to sanity.

They also said in the article that the generation after that, they'll be reining in their power consumption. So, if you bought a 7800/7900/X1900XT(X) level card already, then you'll be fine until after the 300W generation.

I will not buy any graphic card that is incapable of passive cooling, nor will I buy any graphic card that will require another psu on top of my Seasonic S12 500w.

Thanks to idiots with $1200 graphic cards in SLI/Crossfire, they are dumping this crap on us consumers. If the next generation can't be more efficient, then it shouldn't be the next generation.

Sorry I had to rant.

300W is probably for dual GPU cards, since it says from 130 to 300W pr. card.

HAha thats gotta be a joke.... is it....it cant be real lol
Thats gotta be the most rediculous thing ive seen.

I think intel has now recovered from their preshot stupidity, amd done that ages ago by going away from thunderbird athlons, now its nvidia's and ati's turn to have ridiculous heat engines out.

I agree with this too. One more plug on the outside of my case wont matter, but ive got enough heat (and noise...) inside my case anyway.

Didnt the Voodoo 5 cards have external power supplies?

boy i'm gonna have to save up,to pay for my power bills after i get the r600 gpu.
What is the world coming to.A single graphics card consuming 300W is just plain wack.
And i thought netburst prescotts were power hungry.

Not the Voodoo 5, but the unreleased Voodoo 6 was going to have one.

Here's to hoping that this ill-conceived decision gets nixed before the final prduct ships. Frankly this is just going to push their high-end cards further up the ladder and limit their market to the most hardcore enthusiasts. I'm not going to pony up $600(prob $700 MSRP on the next round) and buy a supplemental PSU for another $100 at least. What a crock.

For those of us forward thinking builders, we already have a PSU capable of running two or them, with ease. PC's are going to take up more juice in the future years, might as well get used to it.

Why dont they just stick a power connector right on the card and plug it in directly?

From an ISA standpoint that is true, but you have to build the logic behind it to run the code. This will introduce a lot of complexity that will eat power.

I wish there were seperate external/internal power supplies for graphics cards right now. Seems like we've been ready for a while now, the rest of the PC components aren't requiring power supply upgrades.

You don't have to buy the most exotic graphic solution, but it would be real nice to have a power brick or something to power the graphics in high-end solutions.
