What a joke, ATI and Nvida expect us to buy separate PSUs for G80 and R600

Sorry, but in my mind there is only one way to describe this sort of news:

Flat out DISGUSTING

I don't wish to sound like a bleeding heart tree-hugger, but many countries are now having sharp increases in electricity bills and in Britain theres constant talk on how to supply our future energy demands etc. Allowing video cards which consume that much power certainly doesn't help. I know were talking about a small percentage of computers but it does add up.

We really should start campainging to have limits imposed on power consupmtion for components. And if Intel/AMD/Nvidia/ATI complain - well, tough!

This is insanity. Others have summed it up, both makers of CPU's are reigning in the use of power, now we have the video card going the other way.

I assume that ATI & Nvidia will try to cut down on power with a die shrink. But cutting 300 in half is still 150w.

Funny thing is that the integrated video chipset of Intel's 965 is suppose to be DX10 ready. What power will that motherboard pull.

Once again, ATI/NV did say that the generation after this that they'd be reducing the power consumption. There's no need to get bent out of shape. X1900s and 7900s will be around for a while yet, you can skip the power hungry generation and wait it out.

Granted, if ATI/NV follow the same route Intel did with its first power optimizations, they'll just add the same PowerMizer technology that they put on their mobile line.

I think i might do an evga step up to the new 7950 and stick with that through the entire next generation... If they get cheap enough i'll add a second one and do quad core... I'm sure that'll tide me over until the 9 series.

Perhaps I'll just wire in a 1.0 Farad Capacitor to the 12V lines inside the computer. Works for my car audio system.

are external power bricks just not good enough? frankly i think i'd rather have that than another heat producer INSIDE my computer.

Simple solution:

"Modding". Find out what the voltage/amperage the card needs, and make your own external powerbrick. Or use one of the Asus (I think it was Asus that shipped external power bricks with some cards, if not, anyone care to correct me?) ones, I'm guessing you can pick the bricks up off eBay.

Actually the rumors are that the generation after the R600 and G80 is when they will work towards reducing power consumption. I've been reading rumors that the R600 will be hot and power hungry. Either way, if power consumption is what rumors say, I will be waiting till they get back in line with more sane requirements.

arent they gonna slowly move to smaller processes thus decreasing heat and power ... i know it wont do as much each time but it still helps

they usually just up the clocks because they can with the lower heatoutput .. causing more heat thus nullifying itself O_O hah

but ya... everything in industry tries to go higher and higher so im sure this will too
were we like OH NOES about when cards were passing 100w? i think we were but we dealt

Add yet another reason why I'm holding onto my GF7 for as long as possible.

I see no point in having a DX10 card till all the major game engines are on DX10 as DX9C is today.

Wait till Half Life 3, Quake 5, Unreal Tournament 2009. Then I'll buy a DX10 capable card.

We'll have to reserve judgement till we see the cards anyway.. but I generally buy for the games.
One DX10 game (Crysis), even when thats released wont be enough for me. I want Source2/D4/UE4.0.

I'm enjoying the current DX9C game landscape today. Not really to interested in DX10 or the much delayed Vista in all honesty.

No he said after this generation, the current generation would be the R580 and G71. Next generation would be the R600 and the G80, both of which are rumored to be hot and power hungry. Though I'm hearing this more about the R600 than the G80.

So does this mean that ATi will unleash their triple slot stock cooler rated at 70dbs?

Nothing to say on G80 because i have heard absolutely ZERO news as of late. Wonder whats going on.

12V DC and roughly 12A for the X1900XTX. Make yourself a 30A version with the right molex plug and string the power cord inside your case. The only problem I see is how to get the outside power supply to turn on in sync with the internal one. Also, I think those 5.25in power supplies are a joke. Yeah, sure, I'll put a flaming hot power converter right next to my optical drive. Surely that won't hurt the game discs after hours of gameplay....

Crossfire. Quad SLI. "Quad Father" AMD servers.

1000watt PSU's? We're past absurd. We've passed absurd a long time ago. As loog as you people keep buying this stuff it's just going to get even more crazy.

ATI and NVIDIA won't confirm or deny our findings and we are receiving conflicting information as to the exact specifications of these new GPUs

I doubt you will need a seperate PSU. I hate when there is no new video card news, so sites just make crap up.

AMD will buy ATI, DirectX10 cards will need a flux capacitor, Quake 5 to require Octa-SLI

I hope you're joking.

If you're not, then may lord help you. Did you pass the 12th grade physics class? Sorry, no offense, but that statement was plain stupid ...if it weren't a joke...

Not if he meant that there would be power conversion circuitry built into the board...

I think it's actually a great idea. There could be an interface through the PCI-e bus that turned the cards PS on as the system booted. Then again...maybe it would create too much heat.

ok, ok...every card should come with a power brick.

No, the big joke is people expecting to run Oblivion at native rez with full eyecandy on a 30 inch panel at 100 frames per second.

Nvidia and ATI are just delivering what people are asking for---more horsepower, which is requiring more electrical power.
