What about TYAN-TIGERMP-S2460?

Hello all,

I've been trying to put together a tough system with little cash. Here's the deal:

--Warning!--First solo attempt at building a system (my current system was put together by a friend of mine while I took notes).--Warning!--

I do alot of 3D work and I'm in need of a machine that can handle heavy rendering issues. I would prefer to find something in the dual persuasion, since both processors can be used for rendering. But I am willing to go with the cheapest solution. Oh yeah, I also do some compositing and video work, so I'll need a good video card for that. I've come to you guys to see what you think and to see if you have any suggestions.

For mobo I was thinking about the TYAN-TIGERMP-S2460 AMD MP-1900+ (2x1.60GHz). I haven't seen any reviews for this yet, but right now it is an option. I'm also thinking of just going with some type of mobo for a P4 2.4ghz (any suggestions please). Not sure what to do yet, but I'll be building it soon before school begins in the fall (hopefully before the months out).

For video card it would be (maybe a bit too expensive for now) GeForce4 Ti 4600

thanks,

wadeco

Rendering using what program? For most programs, both processors will be used but only up to 50% capacity each unless the program is both multithreading and SMP aware/capable.

Haven't seen any reviews on the Tyan 2460? It's been out for over a year and there are many reviews out there.

I'd highly suggest visiting 2cpu.com and read up on their forums for all things SMP.

You can get a MSI AMD 760MPX board at newegg for $125 shipped MSI Refurb board

And get 2 1Ghz Duron for $70 shipped. And get 512mg of ECC-Reg. DDR ram from Crucial for around $85.

Great bang for your buck system.

Hello again,

Thanks for the feedback.

Bozo1, I guess what I should have said is that I haven't "looked" for any reviews instead of I haven't "seen" any reviews. I've now read about 5 reviews from various places, and they all seem to approve. Question: Since this board is about a year old, is it still the best cheap dual motherboard out there? I
I'm using Maya 4.0 and my experience tells me it will use both processors fully on a W2k system (Maya is certified on W2K, but will work on XP). Thanks for the heads up on 2cpu.com.

Thanks for the help guys,
Any suggestions are welcomed,

wadeco

I'd recommend the Epox M762A which just came out...

From Epox's website:
June 24 2002 (13:10) - M762A has officially arrived to the States and this board is the MPX AMD dual board which supports AMD MP CPUs. This Hot Workstation Board won't stay too long in the warehouse, so order them ASAP. sales@epox.com or 714 680 0898 X 137. " Distributors and large resellers only!" If you are an end user, contact your nearest computer stores and demand them.

I'd buy this one just b/c Epox boards are usually good, and they have great customer support.

As far as the Tyan board, you can't go wrong with that one either. It's older and cheaper, and I hear it's rock solid for stability. But, you may not get any of the newer features with the Tyan...

As far as 3D video cards are concerned, NVIDIA GeForce is the way to go. They're the undisputed leader of lower end 3D for gaming and what not... Hope this helps!

In the arena of SMP ala AMD, I don't know if it is wise to go with an unproven board. Sure, the Epox looks good on paper (as does the Chaintec), but I am quite happy with my Tyan Tiger MPX-4M. Just be careful out there. www.2cpu.com and forums.2cpu.com

I just ordered one, it was $116 refurbished at Newegg.

I like it, I'm running with dual 1800+ XPs.

You need registered memory with it, and you can't use all heatsinks with it either. USB is disabled by default, my understanding is that AMD requires it for some kind of certification.

It's slow to boot with 1 processor, and I do get a *slightly* lower ECCp score per processor (from 920K it/s -> 918K it/s). It's Linux compatable, if that helps.

If you have any questions, I'll see if I can answer them. I think that Viper GTS has this board too, I'm not sure about that though.
