So was my bro's, plus he used the nyko cooler from day 1. What percentage of failures involved user abuse, and which are strictly faulty design and/or hardware related, I don't know, but both undoubtedly exist.

I know of one personal case of a friend scratching a disk while turning it from side to vertical while it was on. Other than that all of us still have all our original 360s. I personally don't even think it's that loud, when I'm gaming the volumes up and I can't hear it for a damn. It's definitely louder than the newer ones for sure twice as loud atleast, but I hardly notice it when gaming or watching a movie on it. My 360 sits on part of my desk with my wii on top of it =) Never have any problems with either, it does occasionally get intesly hot in here and I have had it lock up on me 2 or 3 times, but never had any problems most people report having.

I haven't measured them, but the Dualshock analog sticks feel like they're shorter than the 360 analog sticks. Shorter = less precision. The 360 sticks are also concave instead of convex, which makes it easier to keep your thumb centered in the stick. It also has the 4 little dots to identify the X/Y axes (sort of like the F and J keys on your keyboard have bumps to tell you where they are). The 360 sticks were designed, the Dualshock sticks were just tacked on.

And I've said this many, many times, but the placement of the left analog stick on the Dualshock controllers is mind-boggling. People always bash the N64 controller - which certainly had its faults - but they don't take into account the fact that it was designed at a time when console gaming was moving from D-pads to analog sticks. The N64 actually started that move. So they designed a controller that could be used either way easily. The Dualshock was designed with the same thing in mind, so they put the D-pad in the same place it had always been and stuck the analog sticks on the bottom. But here we are, two generations later, analog sticks are the default now, not D-pads. Why the hell is the D-pad still in the primary position?!

My theory on why the Dualshock/Sixaxis controller is so well-liked is that people are just so used to using it. The Playstation and PS2 were both dominant consoles, so the Dualshock controller is the most used controller of the last decade. Looking at it objectively, there is nothing about the Dualshock/Sixaxis controller that is better than the Xbox-S/360 controller. At least they added analog shoulder buttons to the Sixaxis, although they feel like they have a shorter range of motion than the Xbox controllers.

Actually, I think the sixaxis still has analog buttons, which the 360s controller no longer has that (other than the triggers). I think that was was a mistake to remove. The sixaxis also has motion controls. While they haven't been used a whole lot, they have worked fairly well where they have been put into use. I do like the 360 controller better overall, but those are two things about the sixaxis I prefer.

I think the ds/sixaxis is a good all-around controller, but there are a few changes I would make. The first change you already mentioned... putting the left analog stick in the primary position. It just works better there. Second, I would make the controller a bit bigger. I think the grips/handles need to be a littler bit bigger. The controller seems a little too cramped at it's current size. Third, I would tighten up the sticks a bit. They are too loose. When I go directly from playing my 360 to the PS3 I tend to be a bit wild on the sticks for the first few minutes. After a few minutes I'm doing fine, but it would just be nice if they were tighter to begin with. Finally, they need to add rumble back in (which is a change they will likely do).

PS3
- I have some weird problem where my USB ports rarely work (I have to plug things in before I turn on the system, or they never recognize. Also, only controllers work). I called Sony, they said they'd call me back, they did, I wasn't able to answer, and they never called back (my dad answered and they said they would). I'm thinking about waiting until later in the year to replace it through their warranty/repair system in order to get a (hopefully) newer model system (less likely to break).
- I have to re-register my bluetooth headset each time I turn on the console (I think it's the headset).

That's definitely a problem with your USB ports. I've had no issues with pluggins devices into my USB ports. I've popped controllers, flash drives, and memory card adapters in there while the system was on and all the devices were recognized just fine.

And, yes, that is very likely a problem with your BT headset and not necessarily that anything is broken on the PS3. Of course, nothing is likely broken on your headset either, some BT headsets do with that with the PS3. What's the make/model? If you Google around you can find lists of compatible headsets. I found a good list on the official US Playstation forums and purchased on based off that list. The list noted which headsets had to be re-registered each time the PS3 was turned on.

I've never understood why people prefer the left stick higher up on the controller. When I hold the PS controllers, my thumb lies perfectly on the stick. And if it were moved, you'd lose the symmetry of the controller.

Disclaimer: I never play shooters.

I hate the PS controller for that reason. Try playing fight night, it is so awkward. When I switch from fight night on the ps2 and fight night on xbox 360. The controls are like night and day. My GF got blisters from fight night due to the ps2 controller. She agrees that it is awkwardly placed too. But then again, all hands are not created equal.

These stupid sticks have replaced the good ol D-pad in practically every game. D-pad seems to have been relegated to weapon selection, its bullcrap!

360:

* Power brick - Its huge, and as others have stated, the cable is fairly rigid
* Connecting 2nd Wireless Controller - Its just odd. You should just hit the button on the controller and it works, not hit the button on the console, then hit one button on the controller, then another button, and possibly repeat until it works.
* UI - I just dont like it. From the bright color scheme to getting lost in the tabbed UI to dealing with an HD DVD movie or playing a game. Much better on the PS3.
* Its loud
* Fear of impending hardware failure - I almost wish it would fail now so its still under warranty and I could get the new cooling. This is the biggest annoyance: Dealing with all these annoying things just to have it die outside the warranty period. I wont buy another one.
* Every game asking you where you want to save data to. Hard drive installed, and nothing else plugged into the console, so WTF?
* Almost every game that I have that has 2 player support requires a second xbox via live, and by extension another TV. WTF happened to split screen? The best thing about a console is playing with multiple people at the same location. And since I have a silver account I cant play anyways.
* Pay for online play. This just sucks ass. I dont care if its only $50, thats per year and it adds up over the lifetime of the console.

PS3:

* PS store doesnt maintain same UI feel as the media bar.
* PS2 games can't be stretched to Full Screen
* When playing PS2 games you have to reactivate the controllers
* Slow game turnout

What kind of TV do you have?

The Full Screen option will stretch it to 16:9 if you have a widescreen. The Normal setting keeps it as 4:3, and your TV should be able to zoom into it if you have a 4:3 HDTV. Both of these are independent of any options set in the game itself.

I have a LN-T4061F. I tried the full mode in the game settings on the PS3 but my TV says unsupported mode. I use wide mode on the Samsung for PS2 games but it doesnt fill up the screen completely. I havent felt like sifting though avsforums, but it should just work.

I only own the PS3:

- I can't get precise control with a game controller that I can with keyboard/mouse. (this is really a complaint about game controllers in general, though)
- When acting as a media hub, playlists for music and subdirectories for video are problematic. (this probably has more to do with the media server software I'm using, however)
- Not many games. (I use the thing more for dvd playback and as a media hub, however)

Xbox360: It's not mine, but someone in the house owns it, and I never touch it.
- Loud: I 'silenced' my computer a bit with some cardboard so being able to hear the Box in the other room is pretty annoying.
- Ethernet cable: Why is the wireless adapter such a rip? Well, obviously I know why, but it still stinks cause the deadbeat that owns the Box won't pay for it. Hell, won't even pay for a longer ethernet so now it's 'hope to hell you don't trip on the wire and drop the Box'. FYI, the owner (genius) managed to pull too hard and drop it about 1.5 feet onto a potted plant.
- Powerbrick: wow. Almost thankful we have still have a huge 25" CRT TV to dwarf the size of that brick.

for me

1) my 360 is now the loudest piece of electronics/computer equipment i have. my MBP is basically silent.
2) the DVD drive is the bane of my life. loud and almost utterly useless.... i have to keep blwoing in it. not sure what that does but it works. it has trouble reading discs, will cop out mid game either crashing the game or leaving me to drive around a completely invisible track in forza 2. to add to that... it scratches all my discs. it royally fvcked my gears of war, and all my other discs have lots of feint cricular scratches all over them. forza 2 disc looks like a dusted my room with it and its only ever been in the machine. im suprised it works at all.
3) headset is crap... im not sure if its me, but i can rarely get private chat to work properly. usually the microphone wont work.
4) build quality....im a big fan of well built pieces of kit, the controllers for sure are solid...but the 360 itself is rather natty. it creaks like an hold house.

up until i got a 360 i used the D-pad on everything. there was nothing more precise than the D-pad on the DS 2 with GT3/GT4. i loved it.

i could never work out if the buttons on D-pad on the dual shock controller for the PS2 were pressure sensitive like the four action buttons, but i think they were.

you had to be so damn precise with those buttons too because even though they were pressure sensitive the range seemed tiny!

So, PS3/Wii/Xbox360 are officially no longer next-gen and are now current gen? I clicked on the thread thinking it'd be about the Xbox/PS2/Gamecube. I guess I'm slow.

I own none (yet) so I can't comment.

As a potential buyer, it annoys me that there's no clear 'winner' yet.

I'm waiting on a 360 revision (if Halo 3 kicks ass), waiting on Mario Kart/Smash Bros, and waiting on FF13/whatever the other big PS3 games are.

Nothing has really been a 'killer app' for me.

My PS3 lacks western story driven RPGs like PlaneScape: Torment and Baldur's Gate 2... pretty much the only genre that I play anymore.

PS3:

- Easy to turn, Bitch to turn off.
- Browser is suck to navigate (vs Wii)

Wii:

- Hurry up and support external storage.
- Stop dribbling out VC titles.

Wii
- Recharging batteries.
- Lack of games (need new Zelda asap!)

360
- Freezes
- Games suck (discovered I could not tolerate console FPS multiplayer)
- Add-ons cost a ton
- AAA titles still cost 60? Blah.

I think you can fix that by clearing your cache... I don't remember how to do that though. It's not an option, you have to press buttons to get to it.

This is the one and only thing I am unhappy with in regards to all of my consoles. If anyone could go into more detail in regards to what buttons to push or even other alternatives to fixing this issue then I would greatly appreciate it.

Not many complaints with the PS3....
-the "download in the background" option doesn't seem to actually download in the background
-Having to turn the controller on again when entering/leaving PS2 games. This is minor, but annoying
-The system is kinda hard to turn off

that has nothing to do with games being AAA. 95% of new releases, on xbox360 AND ps3 are $60.

EDIT: HOLY BLAST FROM THE PAST!

Eh? Works fine for me. I had four items downloading in the background last night. All visible in the queue.

If you're playing a game, it downloads?

Doesn't seem to do that for me. I have to be at the XMB

360:

1) Proprietary Wireless Technology:
This leads to most 3rd party peripherals being wired. Thankfully Microsoft came to their senses and allowed for wireless guitars.

2) Extra Essentials Are Expensive:
$180 for a 120GB HDD. No thanks. Unlike some users here, I could really use it, but not that much.

PS3:

1) Lack Of PSN Demos
A man wants to try a PSN arcade game before he buys it. Only having a demo for one or two of them is not acceptable.

2) Lack Of Games
Eh really not much more to say.

3) Media Hub Capabilities.
Frankly, they're not as good as the 360. I mean as much as I enjoy trying to scroll through hundreds of files in one big long-ass column... just no... no Sony.

Probably some other things I'm forgetting.
