Yea I grew up in a poor household... Pretty much any decent job, with my education, will feel "rich" to me. I've been frugal my whole life - I'm used to just working with what I have and turning it into what I need, because sometimes I wouldn't even have enough to cover my needs. If I get a job that covers my needs, then I'm satisfied. If I get a job that covers my needs plus my future child's needs, then I'm happy.

edit: forgot to mention... im 20, i'm a full time student. I'm living off of scholarships, grants, and loans.

This year ... 6 years out of college. But that's including my wife's salary. Where I work, it's going to be a little while before I break it on my own. Government work is not that lucrative.

Working and having fun in NY is expensive but I figure what the hell? I'm only gonna be young for so long. I'm hoping to have a realistic amount of money for a starter home/apt in about 3-4 years or so (this includes 10-20% deposit + money for furniture). To be honest, though, I might not get to that point till i'm ready to settle down with a girl since NJ prices are shit expensive.

I doubt I ever will, but my wife and I as a family do.

I won't because I am not that type of person who will work 55-60 hours a week to get ahead. I like being with my family too much.

Plus, 100K is not equal to 100K everywhere.

I live in Louisiana and we have a decent house and pay a mortgage of 1,200 while there are some living in much higher cost areas paying more than that on rent.

Pay is relative to where you live.

I'm sure I could make a decent amount more if I were willing to move to a bigger city.

OP - unless you tell us your job, no one can help answer your question. Heck, some career paths with a Masters will never reach $100k.

And note, some positions/careers break the $100k mark due to bonuses and/or stock options.

Am 29 now.
Last year I pulled in 57 thousand, which is pretty good for a guy with no degree.
Got layed off because the price of RAM fell too low.
New job only pays 34 thousand.

It will be a while before I hit 100,000. Sadly, the way this country is going a hundred grand a year wont be much money.

I figure by the time I retire I will need to be averaging about 500,000 a year to be comfortable.
In that case, I really should be at the one hundred mark right now.

My mom never misses a chance to remind me she has lawyers at her firm younger than me making a lot more money. Many young associates start at around 150 thousand. These are 24-26 year olds just out of school.

I'll break it this year for the first time ever. I'm 38 now. The thing I notice is that no matter how much I make, it never seems like enough.

I guess I can see where the OP is coming from. He lives in one of the more expensive states and everything is costing more while at the same time salaries are either not improving enough to help alleviate the money burden or they remain stagnant. At the same time, it doesn't sound like you're seriously struggling so there is no reason to fret about breaking $100K. Who cares? Unless you think you feel you're entitled to something better work your way up. If its going nowhere, consider changing fields or moving to another state.

I can't see myself making $100K anytime soon, or maybe ever. I'm at half that right now, and will be taking a 9% payCUT soon for the "privilege" of becoming a "permanent" employee. Joy.
