Probably like 10 million. The cost of living goes up every year, so like, in 50 years from now it will probably be double what it is now. I'm just throwing numbers mind you, if I really wanted to think about it I could graph living costs over years and try to predict it and stuff.

Though, to live at a minimal lifestyle, probably more along the lines of like 500k. Buy a trailler cash, get it very well insulated, get a small high efficiency furnace in there, and well food, I'm not really a big eater. The biggest cost of living would be taxes.

Where the hell do you live? That wouldn't even cover a mortgage around here.

Fantasy Island.

Nah, it's completely doable. Remember that most of America lives on under 30k, and nearly a quarter of Americans over 25 live on under 13k per year. I live pretty well on not much more than that...even with continuing college costs, international travel, etc.

What really surprises me is the number of people saying they would be 'bored', or would need to work just because. I have absolutely NO common frame of reference to this. My entire life work is just what has gotten in the way of anything important, and everything I want to do. I absolutely detest having to work, and being able to stop would be the greatest day of my life. Bored is what I am at, or because of, work.

Without work you could be in school whenever you wanted, constantly learning new things. You could travel the world at your leisure. You could ponder the questions of the universe, enriching your soul. You could spend all your time and energy with friends, family, loved ones...reveling in fulfilling relationships. You could pursue your hobbies...gardening, woodworking, auto tinkering, fishing, or anything else. Christ, there would actually be enough time to read everything you wanted to. I cannot imagine a greater purpose for life, or a way to attain more joy.

that said, mentally, I don't think I could retire today. after a month, I'd be bored out of my skull and the money I'd have to spend to keep myself occupy would burn through that 50K/year pretty quickly.

When you're 90, $50k/yr is not going to be much.

1.5 million easy

That would give me 30,000/year interest from a 2% savings account... which is about what I make now (after tax) and I save about half of that. So, I'd be getting a 2x disposable income raise. That would be plenty to take it easy and tour the world.

Don't forget you'd have to pay taxes on your interest earned!

I do think that if I had enough money to live comfortably for the rest of my life without ever working again...I'd probably become a professional student...at least for a while.
I've had so dammed much fun going to college for the past couple of years that I'm sad that it's gonna end next month...

I think I'd not only finish the Business Administration/Accounting degree, I'd get...innovative...and take off the wall classes in stuff I know absolutely nothing about...expand my knowledge on "stuff."

$1 million would probably do it for me. I'd rather retire early than improve the lifestyle at that point.

I'd rather work. School sucks.

Maybe that's because I haven't taken many classes that I actually cared about..hah..

I think 5 million would do it for me. I'd take half that money and invest it in low risk mutual funds and play with the rest.

I think I could get by on a $1 million, but more realistically it would probably take $3 million post tax.

I've learned to live on shit from year to year, and I can still save, even if unemployed here and there.....

So...maybe ~1 million. I can make that work for my ancestors, easy.
