I've seen idiots who called the main course an entrée.

An entrée is the starter, that's what the word means.

Because that's what it means if you live in North America

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entrée

I hate it when people say that. I'm not French but I did know what entree means because I took French in school for a couple years. Naturally I assumed that meant the appetisers, those things people order before the main dish. It turns out appetisers are called appetisers and the "entry" foods are the things after the appetisers. What the heck!?!!?

I understand how it's employed, in culinary terms, by you guys, which is quite different as to how this French word is used in culinary terms here in America, but the word Entrée means entry in French. It doesn't mean starter. That's simply not "what the word means."

Not a mispronunciation, but a mis-spelling:
Ex-wife wrote "Problemly" rather than Probably.

She also pronounced "Three Stooges" as Three Stoogents.

I remember I had to look after an American lady once.

Who would have known that "Da dee da do da doo doo" means "Excuse me, could someone help me to the toilet?"

Took 3 of us about half an hour to work that one out. :\

"Ah knead to do da doo-doo"

I need to do the doo-doo.

I need to doo-doo.

I need to go potty.

Is that it?

Yep, I'm impressed. :awe:

Although we were under the disadvantage that doo-doo is not commonly (ever?) used for toilet over here.

i heard this a lot while i lived in kentucky...

rather than say "idea," people would say "ideal".

ex: "hey, that's that's a great ideal."

When my twin bro and I went to WV for 5 months and went to high-school, the English teacher explicitly explained the difference between "idea" and "ideal," leaving my twin brother and I chuckling and asking how anyone could possibly get them confused. When we returned to GA where we have spent the previous 17 years of our lives, we finally encountered ONE person who did it. It turns out that he and his family were from KY. I guess we were laughing at KY.

Those are croissants.

Pronounced "Qwa-son"[Soft n]

basically, if you walk into any establishment here and pronounce it the correct, French way--you will either get punched in the face, or certainly--a lot of odd looks.
