I just built a 64 bit intel (BIG MISTAKE THERE!!) and the video drivers don't work for a x16 PCI card, AND, no virus protection at all from Symantec. Please folks, this is a must. I need viruis protection on this system or I will throw this POS in the trash heap. It's got on board video on the mobo so if I can't get drivers from ASUS (AX550 gamer) to fix this, it will have suck video response.

Regarding the video situation... lessee here... Intel motherboard-chipset drivers for WinXP Pro x64 Edition to start with, and I don't know what video card you have...?

Thanks Mech. I think Norton should have the service too, since the whole industry is going 64 bit now. My supplier doesn't sell anything but 64 bit now. I think they are pressured by microsoft. The video card is an ASUS AX550 Gamer.

I bet Symantec/Norton pigeonholed WinXP x64 Edition as a "workstation" OS and a scarce one at that, and might only have 64-bit support in Symantec's corporate version. That's just a guess off the top of my head, bsobel could tell you the straight scoop

Ok, for the video drivers, how about try these from ATI themselves, if you didn't already: https://support.ati.com/ics/support/def...?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27 and you have to drill a little further from there, they don't seem to allow direct links beyond that. Note that the .NET framework is a prerequisite for installing the video driver, which might've been the hangup before.

64-bit virus scanners:
Avast!
AVG Professional
NOD32 Version 2
Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition v.10
McAfee ViruScan Enterprise 8.01

ASUS AX550 drivers:
I don't see anything on ASUS's side that shows support for 64-bit, but that card is based on the ATi Radeon X550, so try ATi's 64-bit drivers.

The hardware may be 64-bit, but the work world isn't rushing to 64-bit operating systems on workstations. None of my clients have ever asked about it. At this point, in my opinion, 64-bit XP Pro creates more problems than it solves.

I agree. This needs plenty of work. I removed the video card and used the on board video and drivers and it works fine. The AX550 is back in the box. It might work with an AMD since AMD works with both 32 bit and 64 bit at the same time. Intel did the wrong thing not doing as AMD did.

Norton/Symantec's usual solution is to acquire a small company that has the solution - cannibalize it and throw the bones on the scrap heap. As you can probably tell - I belong to the "ABN" club (Anything But Norton.)

Intel's 64 bit processors run in 32bit mode as well. I have a buddy with one, he runs normal windows xp. Your video problem probably has to do with a conflict between your onboard video and the video card. Try disabling the onboard video in the bios. Its either that or you downloaded the wrong drivers for the video card (you did go download drivers for 64bit right?)

I have a AMD64 he has the intel version. Both of us run 64bit gentoo fine (in to set him up he just copied my hard drive, and rebuilt the kernel, switched the cflags to enable some features I didn't have on my AMD64 and did an emerge -e world), and both of us have had windows 32bit and windows 64bit on our boxes at one point or another.

I used to defend Norton products, but that was until it decided it didn't want to leave my system. I started getting an error whenever I opened an Office application... something about MSIs not supporting the repair feature. Google searches revealed this to be related to something screwed up with Norton.

So I try to uninstall System Works, starts uninstalling and then Anti-Virus refuses to uninstall, and it craps out. I decide to try to repair System Works, but it gives me an error. I try reinstalling System Works, but it says it's already installed and won't let me. So I delete the Norton System Works folder, reboot, and run a registry cleaner. I still get the error in Office! So I try to reinstall System Works again, and it still says it is installed!

Eventually I just reformatted. I won't touch their crap again.

When I have problems like that with norton, the only way I can cure it without re formating is reg edit everything that has norton or symantec in the file name or assocition. That has always woked so far. Takes al ong time and you must be careful, but it does allow a corrupted install usually to work.
