What AP means next to a US city name?

Hello,

I am not American and I am creating a database with Cities from all over world for a project.
Inside the data that gave to me there are US Cities that have the AP abbreviation and others that not. For example I have Allentown AP and Allentown without AP. Is this the same city? What this AP means?

Thank you.

I've never seen AP used before, but Allentown is usually Allentown, PA because PA is the state. Is it attached to all the cities?

I have other example too. For example (State : New York, City: Watertown), (State : South Dakota, City : Watertown AP), (State:Washington, City:Aberdeen),(State:South Dakota,City: Aberdeen AP) and many others.

associated press. Usually. That is not conclusive, however, so I will allow further feedback in this thread.

It depends where you're getting the information from as to what AP means. It's most commonly the abbreviation for Associated Press. In that case... I would just record the city name without the AP, and if you have duplicate city names within a single state, then just eliminate one of the duplicates.

The "AP" after a city name at the beginning of a news article denotes it was written by the Associated Press-- it actually has nothing to do with the city or the state.

If the city is not one that would be nationally known, then there should be a state abbreviation after the city name-- otherwise, the city name alone can be used.

The same standard is used by the Associated Press for foreign cities-- if the city is well-known (i.e. Paris, London, Hamburg, Moscow) the country name is ommitted.

what was the source of the data?
it really depends on the context the data was collected in or what it was intended for

If you're reading any news article, it's very likely you'll see the "AP" designation as you've suggested (likely as follows: NEW YORK (AP)) This just means that the news story is about a particular city, in this case, New York, and has been reported by the Associated Press. You can read more about the Associated Press here, http://ap.org/

The "AP" is definitely not a part of the city name, it's just telling you the source of the news story that occurred in a particular city

Peace

Weird. I see a lot of references to "watertown municipal AP"...

accounts payable

Except that it was under stuff like weather reports.

Airport? Meteorological measurements are often taken at airports. I've usually seen it abbreviated Arpt., though.
