This is a cable internet connection and the houses are approximately 55' away from each other and a road seperates them.

Wireless is your best option. With a road in the way, you would have to have permission to run cable of any type.
With the bridge to bridge wireless, you can go for several miles with the right antennas and line of sight.
I would look for devices that support external antennas.

If there's some trees on either side of the street, you could get a router in the house with the internet and get a really long LAN cable to go up to a tree, over the road to antoehr tree, then into the other house. Might be fun just to do it.

But yeah, wireless is the best option.

I like Franky's idea

My brother and I lived across the street from each other and we were considering purchasing a wireless internet connection and just running a LAN cable across the street...unfortunately I moved in June and we never got around to doing it.

Regular Ethernet (cat5) has strict guidlines on how far it can be run before the signal fades and is unreadable(100M/300FT). Be carefull to use only *short* runs to prevent signal/packet loss. (also must be longer than 1M/3ft)

Go Wireless. But lock that connection down. Don't want other neighbors robbing your bandwidth, *cept for LAN gaming of course*
802.11b is a wireless Ethernet technology operating at 11MB. 802.11b devices use Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) radio technology operating in the 2.4GHz frequency band. (Be carefull you don't have anyone around a few houses using a wireless telephone on the same FREQ*i have one and is causes lost packets/errors and occasional rings*)

An 802.11b wireless network consists of wireless NICs and access points. Access points act as wireless hubs to link multiple wireless NICs into a single subnet. Access points also have at least one fixed Ethernet port to allow the wireless network to be bridged to a traditional wired Ethernet network.. Wireless and wired devices can coexist on the same network.

802.11b devices can communicate across a maximum range of 50-300 feet from each other dependant on blockage and access point(hub) signal stregnth.

Length, lightening and the elements. Not to mention extremely trailer park. If you have line of sight then wireless bridging is viable. Do not run cat 5 above ground.

Don?t forget to place the rechargeable batteries in a good spot. You do not want to waste all of the electricity that will be collected from the Lighting.

Also check if your Home insurance covers the house in case of a fire from lighting caused by unprofessional Antenna installation.

Yeah, lightening is not Cat5's friend. Nor is it your house's friend, for that matter.

IDOT Shouldn't have any problems with having you dig up their street...as long as you put everything back when you are done
