hey everyone,

I am thinking of doing a new abuild and its been a very long time and havent been in the loop on new tech. So I was wondering what are people buying these days for new computer builds for gaming?

are people still buying ddr3 or have they moved onto ddr 4?
are people buying teh new skylake stuff or staying on the 5th gen (which i have no idea what it is)?

thanks for your help

I'm in the same boat. I get the general feeling that people like us who have ancient systems and no reusable parts seem to be opting for Skylake. But I'm not convinced that's the right option for me. The Haswell-E (previous architecture) is very strong and you'll find lots of articles questioning why the consumer would want to upgrade.

Both chipsets (Skylake Z170 socket LGA 1151, and the 'older' X99 socket LGA 2011-3) seem to offer similar options in way of disk access and memory speed. But there is one difference I'm seeing in PCIe lanes and I'm personally weighing the importance of that.

I'm not sure what else is different besides the number of cores on the CPU itself.

I just bought a new Haswell-E rig. I like that I can upgrade it to 128GB of ram, and that it supports M.2 drives. It will make a nice ESXi host someday.

I just bought a 6700k system. My signature has the system I built. I am saving up for a newer video card since it was not in my budget when the parts were picked out.

I don't know what your plans are, but you have a lot of good re-usable parts (Antec 900,
gigabyte gtx 560 @1Ghrtz, seasonic 700w, windows 7 Pro). As VorpalBunny mentioned, RAM doesn't really matter since you will have to buy some anyway. There is only about a $10 price diff between 8 GB of DDR3 and DDR4. Going from a Yorfied to a Harwell refresh is going to be a huge jump in CPU-intensive tasks, Skylake a tiny bit more so.

Neither would be a bad decision, but if I were upgrading today, it would be Skylake all the way.

My Llano desktop (A8-3870k with 8gb of ddr3) was taken out by a power surge, so I am putting together a budget system based on an FX-8320 (with Microcenter-bundled motherboard), 16gb ddr3 and a vanilla GTX 660, along with one optical drive and a 1tb hard drive.

I bought a pair of G1610 IB Celeron dual-cores, to match with some mobos I has purchased previously.

thanks for the replies guys. I actually need to change my signature since I actually upgraded to a R4 case and a different video card. But I guess Skylake is the way to go.

I went with Maximum PC magazine advice and for performance I just ordered an X-99 based system (i7 5930K).
