What are some good sites (or other resources) for a total beginner to learn the guitar?

I bought an electric guitar and amp almost a year ago but I never really had the time for practicing. Currently my schedule is a bit more open and I'm ready to learn how to play. Does anyone know of any good sites or books that teach newbies how to play the guitar?

I just had a thought are there any "Guitar playing for dummies/idiots" books?

Go make friends with someone who is really good and play a lot with that person. Then practice until your fingers bleed.

you don't need to know much to learn how to play... most popular songs out are just a mixture of a few easy chords.

This site right here has many popular tabs for songs... and good tabs usually tell you how the chords look like. doesn't take more than 10-15 minutes to learn how to play most songs

I looked all over for a website that helped me learn the guitar .. didn't really find a good one. I think it is nice to have an actual person teach you, and also you can download tabs and try to figure out the strumming and such (assuming you know how to read tabs). I kinda gave up and sold my guitar though, so maybe that isn't the best method I think some people (such as me) just weren't meant to play an instrument or sing or whatever.

oh yeah, there's a complete idiot's guide on how to play the guitar, i'm sure there's a dummies guide too.. i have the idiot's guide- all it taught me was basically how to string an acoustic guitar. learned how to play mostly on my own, and if i had some problems (rarely) i'd usually just ask a friend

Is it difficult to learn how to play the blues? I've been wanting to play Jimi Hendrix's "Red House Blues" every since I first heard it.

There are two parts in being a good musician.
1. Playing by ear, which in involves listening to a song and learning to play it by picking it out on your guitar.
2. Learning music theory, to read music, etc.

I think learning music theory and how to read music first is the best way but then that is how I was trained.

heres a really good place, use to be free but now it charges 10 a month for guitar lessons.

It is completely worth the 10. The only problem is that it has shut down for a bit because of lost profits. They have some demo lessons that give you a taste of what it is.

It also might be free once again because the teacher got himself signed up with guitar center to start doing lessons, but that might take awhile for it to get started.

I too bought a guitar a while back, and never got around to learning it.........hopefully someone posts a good site or two. I found that learning from a friend is the easiest way, so far, though.

Taking lessons is the best way. I've been taking lessons for a few months now and have been playing guitar for about 8 or 9. Just go in and tell the teacher what songs or style you want to play. Also, don't learn songs only from your lessons, teach yourself songs from tabs too, that's how I learned most of what I know.
