The mobile bartons to ~ 2.7ghz i think were common.. I got stuck at 2621 with massive heat problems :S Could hit 2.7 on a cold day being prime+8hr gaming stable. Needed a better radiator setup, but was running with "quiet" fans...

Funny, 3 or 4 years later i'm still stuck at a 18xxmhz ~ 27xxmhz overclock. Opty 165. Still with about the same "cold day" limitations.

How late were those....

I remember many getting the xeon 1.6ghzLV chips to 3.2ghz by changing the fsb to 200 or 800fsb total...MichaelD I think did this as well...

I don't remember seeing anybody get 3.2 with those. Duvie had 2, and they never got that high.

I agree...they were certainly not the norm if they did happen and that is what the OP was asking...

I am sure he is talking about the LV Xeon versions...they were known good ocers as ther were part of the prestonia core.

I distinctly remember being very pleased with my PentiumMMX, factory clocked at 166MHz, that could do 233MHz.

I heard the old s754 Sempron 64 2500+ could hit 2.5 GHz easily, and probably 2.3 GHz guaranteed. That's 64-80% for a chip that cost less than $50.

I highly doubt the P4 1.6A could reach 3.2 GHz stable. My 2.4B could only reach 2.93.

I had the good ol' 300Mhz CeleronA (with 128KB of L2 cache). I was able to get it to 450MHz using a TT Golden Orb. This was a 50% overclock.

I also had a .18m 566Mhz Coppermine Celeron w/ 128KB cache. I was able to get it to 871MHz on a 103MHz bus!

I've had no such luck with the 2 AMD CPU's I've had (Mobile Athlon XP 2800+ (2.0GHz to 2.5Ghz, 25%) and my current Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (2.4GHzx2 to 2.7GHz, 12.5%)).

I've had a few noteworthy overclockers that kept me happy for a time.

Pentium 550Mhz (coppermine) @ 825Mhz.

Celeron 566Mhz (coppermine) @ 925Mhz

Duron 600Mhz (spitfire) @ 1050Mhz

Athlon 1Ghz (thunderbird) @ 1500Mhz

Celeron 1.1a (tualatin) @ 1720Mhz

Mobile Celeron 1.6Ghz (northwood) @ 2600Mhz

1.4Ghz P4M (northwood) @ 2.4Ghz

Athlon 1700+ 1433Mhz (thoroughbred) @ 2300Mhz

Sempron 2800+ (palermo) @ 2500Mhz

All of the above qualify for the 50% club!

Now just being patient and waiting for the E4300....

First one that came to mind for me. I took mine to 2.4GHz with ease (stock was 1466MHz IIRC). 63.7% overclock.

I've seen 2.5GHz on air for those chips. That was amazing. I certainly wanted one...

Hulk, why don't you make a poll. There are several mentioned here, use %average OC as a guide, and make the post high to low of the ones mentioned. So far, at 85%, I think the E6300 is winning, but a poll would confirm.

Couple years ago I bought a refurb 2.4C P4. Got it in and there was a gouge in the IHS like someone stuck a knife in it and somehow not managed to bend the pins. Thinking what a bummer, I'll never get much speed outta this succor with a bad IHS and I suck at sanding CPU's (wont say lapping as I dont have a mill, but people still call sanding "lapping" ), so I took it off and got a swifty heatsink as the stock P4 cooler would not work. To this date it is still running @ 315FSB, or 3780MHz. Best $69 I ever bought from a online vendor when these were going for $210-$280 range
57.5% OC

I've still got two of the best overclockers, although one of them is no longer in use. The Celeron 300A, plus the BH-6 is in the basement somewhere, but the 2.4 Northwood is still going strong in my son's computer with an Abit IS7-E. I only have it clocked to 2.88, but it can go over 3.2.

What's the deal with the E4300? Why is it expected to clock so highly? Is it still dual core?

It is a 2MB cache Core 2 Duo (Allendale? not Conroe). It's basically like the E6300 and E6400 with 2MB cache, not the E6600 and E6700 with 4MB cache. It also lacks VT, FWIW. People are excited about this chip for two reasons.

#1 It will be the lowest end and thus the cheapest. Not necessarily when it comes out in a month, but supposedly by sometime in the second quarter the unit price in quantity from Intel pins the chip at $113. Would you care to buy a Core 2 Duo for just over $100? I sure would.

#2 It runs on a lower FSB of 800MHz. Why is this important to an overclocker? Well, don't think of the FSB yet, but instead think of the multiplier. The E4300 has a 9x multiplier, the same as the E6600. The E4400 (which will only be $20 more in second quarter) will have a 10x mutliplier, same as an E6700. The higher multiplier means you can get the high clock speeds without having to buy super expensive RAM and motherboards.

My plan was to make a poll after I figured out which processors to include. Now there are so many in this thread my head is reeling!

OK, I now have THREE E6300's, one at 3.4, one at 3.43 and one at 3.46.... And I have an E6400 coming, but I tell you, the E6300 has to be the champ on the average....

EDIT: If you go by percentage where 2 or more cpu's are named and verified, then you take the average OC. I think from what I have seen, the E6300 is champ.

i heard of northwood cellys hitting 3.8Ghz from 2Ghz stock...

My celly 400 did 540 iirc...

my current tbred-b 2000+ does 2.3 from 1.67 stock, but it's not a patch on the 1700+ tbred-bs...
