I've been looking for something new to play lately other than usual run and shoot type of rut I've been stuck in. So I decided to pull out my dusty old box of games I have'nt played in years and realized that there have been some really beautiful (and quirky) games created over the years.

For example:

Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Katamari Damacy
Everyday Shooter (not so old, but still great example of a beautiful game)
Okami

Those are just a few off the top of my head, but what are some games you've played that hit that mark of being fun, beautiful and distinctive?

I'm a big fan of Okami but you already have that. Off the top of my head, the only "different" game I can think of that was enjoyable is Flower (a psn game).

C&C Renegade

Strange fighting from the perspective of a grunt in the C&C Universe. A beautiful game in it's multiplayer gameplay but rather a downer in general to the community.

King's Bounty: The Legend, Armoured Princess and Crossworlds

Take the HoMM series, remove town management and turn-based map navigation. Bring in real time map navigation over multiple maps with a multitude of artifacts, skills and other considerations to manage and several boss fights and you have a modern (and superior imo) HoMM-type.

I thought Folklore (PS3) was a rather unusual but beautfiful and stylish game. The gameplay is a bit repetitive though.

If it's any system, why is this in PC gaming?

But anyway... Here's my list:

1)Half Life 2. I thought the game was incredibly beautiful, and I still think it has one of the very best looking graphics engines og all time. I keep seeing people post about how the games graphics are "dated". I think these people are insane, because IMO, where the gfx may be dated slightly in character/enemy models, they more than compensate in landscape which is gorgeous to say the least... Just look at the water! Mountains, forests..... It's amazing... Did the people who say the gfx are dated even try Episode 2? As for unusual.... Well, the story was pretty unusual IMO, at least when HL1 came out.

2)Crysis.... Need I say more?

3)EVE Online. Truly a beautiful game, and incredibly unique. There is simply nothing else like it.

4)Imperium Gallactica II. Back when it came out, it was... well.. I was simply speechless. Were did my summer vacation go back then? I still cannot fully comprehend it.

5)Fallout 3. I replayed it 3 times over and over again, and I still cannot get enough of it. Amazing graphics, story, physics.... I just dont have enough words to describe how much I love this game. If I loved it any more, I'd marry it. ; ) (jk)

6)Drakkan: Order of Flame. It was incredibly beautiful and unusual when it came out.

7)Severance: Blade of Darkness. One of the most unique games I even played. What other game has such cool combos?

8)FABLE (the original one) ON THE PC

9)Warhammer 40k: Dark Omen. It was so unusual... There is still nothing else like it even now.

10)Ultima IX: Ascention It was so beautiful when I 1st saw it.... My GeForce 2 with 32mb couldn't handle it, yet I still played, because I just had to play it!

11)Jupiter: The Moon Incident. Try it. You'll see what I mean.

Ok I need to stop now, because I can go on for weeks....

There's no general gaming forum. He doesn't want to limit it to the pc or a specific console, so it is "out of place" in either subforum. He probably decided on pc gaming since it has more traffic than the console section.

The first King's Bounty game actually came out before Heroes. I also recently learned it was the same lead designer and studio behind both games, of course the modern ones are no longer done by the same people.

Probably these:

1. Starcraft, the gameplay, the customs, the music, the storyline, the fact it was all tied together in 1998 much better than many games today are is fantastic. Starcraft II is great as well but it has still to prove itself.

2. Half life 2, so much fun with such a cool storyline, a rare combo.

3. Dead space, this is survival horror done right, very cool game! Resident evil is dead to me.

4. Resident evil 2/3, scary games with cool monsters and storyline, lengthly as well, especially 2.

5. Farcry/Crysis, excellent mix of run and gun plus optional stealth, farcry was something special in 2003 and crysis built on that.

6. Alpha Centauri, what a frickin weird game i thought when i first played it, i built lines of what i later learned were sensor towers thinking they would be like the obelisk of light from c&c 1 only to be stunned when enemies walked right past them. Also being able to capture forests seemed weird, i later learned that was the gaian factions bases heh. Had many fun games on this over the years and it was and still is better than civ imo.

7. Fallout 3, i never played the first two fallout games but i had played oblivion and didnt like it all that much. I enjoyed battering the townspeople with a sword and stealing from them but that got old fast. I also played stalker but its engine was rubbish the loading between areas was a PITA and the whole game was a bit of an overcomplicated drag tbh. I always thought it would be cool if they remade oblivion with guns in a nuclear wasteland setting which is what fallout 3 is, amazing game!

8. C&C RA1, Spent a lot of time playing this, fighting giant ants etc, very cool game, great music, great storyline, great gameplay, the only thing it lacked was a good online component such as battle.net, if it had that i believe people today may still be playing it. Hell theyre still playing RA2.

9. Diablo II, Oh man, talk about addictive... Must farm must get more SoJ's to buy awesome items to dominate everyone else, then maybe build a new char and get awesome items for that and so on. Such a fun game shame blizz wrecked it with 1.10. Only thing blizz have screwed up IMO.

10. Giants citizen kabuto, Funny game with cool story/characters and great gameplay. Online was a blast as well!

11. Recoil, The first and best tank sim ive ever played. Dunno if its really a tank sim, its more of an FPS where you happen to be a tank which can shoot lasers/fire/ice/mortar/electricity/mines/missiles/nukes and can also transform into a hovertank/boat/submarine. Easily i might add, which is what made it fun for me

12. Simcity 2000, awesome fun!

13. GTA 1, i actually contemplated having my friend copy it onto about 40 floppy disks so i could play it at my house, it was so fun and i couldnt wait till my birthday to get it.

14. Star trek armada II, it was just really fun, had everything i wanted in an RTS at the time along with cool sci-fi stuff

15. Star trek elite force, great game, cool story, fun levels and gameplay. Only bad thing about this is not being able to go on a rampage and take over voyager single handedly. If you try your character will drop to their knees and cry after killing 2-3 crewmates which ends the game, sucks.

Trine. Cheap PC game and, even though it's just a side-scrolling platformer, they put a lot of effort into creating detailed environments.

Flower is definitely unique. I wish TGC would release an expansion for it. The game was way to short. Okami is already on the list. Would be sweet if Capcom released a high def version in the vein of GofW and Ico. Not gonna happen though.

Grim Fandang always springs to mind whenever this question comes up. Well, pretty much any classic LucasArts adventure game, and the Telltale revivals that followed.

Yeah, I don't have any hope for an update. I'm also a bit miffed that Okamiden is being released to the DS. Why would you make a game for a console, then make the sequel for a handheld?

I thought the art direction in Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines was quite good, as was the music.

Planescape: Torment's was good too. It's too bad no one is likely to ever take all that hand-drawn art and give us a hi-res version instead of the 640x480 we have now.

You can play the game with mods at any resolution you want. The artwork hasn't been re done, but it's still a fine improvement.

^ that's a useful link, especially now that you can get PS:T from GoG.com

But I'd still like to see the art at higher DPI, the source art before they reduced the pixels per inch to work at 640x480.

Uncharted 2 was amazing as was red dead redemption for the ps3. I've only been playing old pc games lately because nothing good has come out recently. Other than starcraft but I have no desire to play that in MP.

From the games you list, it sounds like you mean "beautiful" in an artistic or design sense, not in terms of graphical quality or gameplay depth.

Psychonauts is the prime example that comes to mind. The story is pretty original and the levels and environments are totally unlike anything I have seen in any other game. Cryostasis is another example. It's actually not that great as a game, but if you look at it as a symbolic work of art, it stands out.

Some other such games I can think of are Grim Fandango, MDK2 and World of Goo, and there are also a few older ones that were very unique but not necessarily good.

Definitely have to agree with Myst. I'm playing REALmyst right now and it's mysterious, intriguing, and overall a fantastic experience that no other game has given me.

Also, Braid. A beautiful side-scrolling puzzle game with a somehow existential storyline. The music is dreamy, and it feels like I'm playing in a painting.

This. Probably the best game I have played in a long, long time.

Also, The Void. It's a VERY strange game but the graphics are intriguing and the story and game play are completely unique of anything else out there. Contains nudity (though done in a very tasteful way), so not for when kids are around.
