what are the quietest HDDs and CD ROM drives

Like the title says.. looking for some quite drives.

I have a Maxtor DM+ 7200 ATA66 and I hear it over everything else when I start my system.
I'm using a Mitsumi CD ROM and it can get kinda annoying as well when it spins up.

I have Panaflo fans on every thing..
120mm front and rear
80mm in the PSU
L1As everywhere but the HS/F wich has the H1A? (high output anyway)60mm.

what drives you recomend for low noise?

Actually now reading the title I might have something to contribute.
Quietest HD for 5400rpm is Maxtor(and new model) and for 7200rpm IBM 75GXP

Quietest CD-ROM is Kenwood True-72X, it's not only the fastest but spins at half the rate as &quot;normal&quot; CD-ROM's.

I'd like to have at least 40x or so, but quite is the most important.

How about ps and fans?, which tend run quietest? Any of the larger fans for 1.2GHz reasonably quiet?

The Maxtor DM+40 series drives are by FAR the quietest hard drives I have seen. If the motor is making a really loud high pitched sound (like one of the ones I got) you can RMA it. Just go to Maxtor's site and go through the RMA wizard. I did it and the replacement is MUCH quieter.

the fujitsu MPF and MPG series drives dominate in quietness...they use FDB (fluid dynamic bearing) instead of ball-bearing crap asss...

they are quiet...damn quiet...i can't hear mine...

my DVD is possibly quiter...tho it sucks for numerous reasons (i.e. not reading cdrw media)...can't help u here..tho i imagine <50x roms should be relatively quiet..name brand ones...i.e. panasonic...i've had good luck w/ panasonic drives being quiet.

My Maxtor 80 gig is very quiet! So is my Plextor 16x drive. However, my Hitachi 6x dvd is a little noisy!

IBM deskstars are pretty quiet but PC case chassis can also transmit/amplify noise!
I had a very cheap &quot;Genius&quot; 44X CD-ROM that was very quiet and smooth - much nicer unit than my current ASUS 40X and only half the cost!

I have one of the Western Digital 30 GB 7200 RPM HDD's, and I could barely hear it with my case open. I do have a few fans though, so it may be slightly audible if you have a very quiet case.
