I tried searching for the competitors for the galaxy S3 but for some reason everyone is insisting that last year models from other manufacturers are it (they aren't, they are the competitors for the S2)...

So, do anyone know of other upcoming current gen phones besides the galaxy S3?

The big phones this year from what I can tell are the HTC One X and variants, Galaxy S3, iPhone 5, the next big Motorola phone(not a whole lot is known about this one but rumors suggest 720p screen, next gen SOC, Razr Maxx battery), and rumors of several Nexus phones from different manufacturers coming out all around the same time at the end of the year. Nothing too noteworthy from any other company that I've seen so far.

From the anadtech review the One X appears to be on par with the Galaxy S2, not even close to the Galaxy S3. The international version is slightly better but still much closer to the S2

Thanks for the info.

That will be an android right? didn't google buy motorola? Any rumor on when we can expect that?

End of the year? That is a real shame, its far too long a wait compared to the few days until the S3

The One X is pretty similar to the S3.

OneX has a slightly better screen, S3 has microSD slot/removable battery.

Lots of people think the OneX is a prettier phone.

Juries out still on which one has the better battery life, I'm betting on the S3.

screen size has been pretty constant for the last few years.. And microSD slot? removable battery? What do those have to do with determining what generation a phone belongs in?

The OneX is getting computational performance at most 10% faster then the S2; making it the fastest of last gen phones.
The S3 gets 50-60% faster making it the first of the current gen and totally annihilate in terms of speed anything from last gen.

Also, the OneX has an IPS LCD while the S3 has an OLED Screen which is superior.

The One X is pretty similar to the S3.
... how so? Or rather, how is it more similar to the S3 yet different to the S2.

Lots of people think the OneX is a prettier phone.
Irrelevant to determining a phone's GENERATION. I said the One X is on par with the S2. How does being "pretty" change that?

And I'm saying you're wrong. Its competitive with the S3.

Which SGS3? The international SGS3s have quad core Exynos and the international Ones use Tegra 3, the US SGS3s and US OneX's have Snapdragon S4s, so the US models will perform pretty similarly. Generation-wise, I'd consider the HTC Ones and SGS3s to be in the same 'generation' though.

Edit - Also, the iPhone '5' will be an iPhone 4S with an LTE radio, with a 28nm baseband and a 32nm SOC, sold under the name iPhone 4GS. Apple doesn't make massive revolutionary jumps between devices, they make small incremental updates. Always have. If you're expecting a 4"+ screen, laser projected keyboards, automatic BJs, and Jarvis, you're going to have a bad time.

I'm assuming taltamir is the US? Then OneX and SGS3 will both be Snapdragon S4s and very close in performance. Do you prefer Sense 4 or TouchWiz?
Yup.

Sense4+IPS+no microSD+fixed battery
vs
TW+LED pentile+microSD slot+swappable battery

Size and weight are very similar. One X had bootloader lock but that seems to have been circumvented. S3 also should have Wolfson DAC for better headphone sound.

And you are backing it up with nonsense like "has an SD card reader".

I am going by performance and hardware content from the anandtech preview http://www.anandtech.com/show/5811/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-preview

Browser test:
SGS3: 161710
OneX International: 110038
OneX US:102640
SGS2: 101869

GPU test:
SGS3: 103
OneX International: 63
SGS2: 62
OneX US:55.9

Which OneX?

Both versions of the OneX get similar performance in the anandtech tests. The international is only slightly better. I compared both of them to the SGS3 version tested in anandtech because I was not aware that the US version is supposed to have such a huge downgrade in processor.

However, if the US version of the SGS3 will use the same processor as the OneX US then this is a travesty. The SGS3 international scores 58% faster on browser (CPU) and 84% faster on render (GPU).

Sense4+IPS+no microSD+fixed battery
vs
TW+LED pentile+microSD slot+swappable battery
With the exception of the screen, those are FORM FACTOR issues and have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the generation a device belongs to.

Things that determine the generation of the device are the electronics inside it now the form factor... that is the CPU, GPU, RAM, and Display.

Yeah, this proves two things:

(1) TouchWiz browser destroys Sense/AOSP browser.
(2) Exynos (both flavors) destroys both Nvidia and Qualcomm competitors.

Unfortunately, no LTE model has had Exynos, and that will continue through this generation.

Eyxnos 4 Quad has a quad core 1.4Ghz Cortex A9 CPU.
Tegra 3 in the international HTC One X has a quad core 1.5Ghz Cortex A9 CPU.

Those stats don't prove that Exynos is better than Tegra, but Samsung is far more efficient at optimizing software than HTC is.

No that's not what I'm using to back it up.

I haven't the time or desire to deal with your arguing so how about you just go read engadgets or the verges' S3 reviews?

I just read both and neither mentions that the US Version will use tegra 3 instead of the more powerful Eyxnos 4

Tegra 3's performance, features, and capabilities have been pretty well documented at this point. And we know its not going to be the greatest SoC out there, once OMAP5, S4, and Exynos4Quad are widely available, Tegra 3 will be the low end SoC.

Sony is supposed to be coming out with a Xperia superphone, not sure if we will get it in the US. Could maybe get it unlocked. Google Xperia SX and Xperia GX.

LG will probably have a quad-core phone or a dual-core. http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/11/lg-ls970-superphone/

HTC/Samsung just released their top of the line phones, and I don't think we will see anything better from them for a while.

iPhone 5.

Windows Phone 8 and its new handsets (Q4?)

Also, you seem biased against the One X. Lots of people prefer its IPS LCD over the Galaxy's AMOLED. You also mention that the Tegra 3 international One X is better than the S4... I thought most people preferred the S4 version. http://www.anandtech.com/show/5779/htc-one-x-for-att-review/4
Also, not sure if the new exynos supports LTE, there are rumors the sgs3 will come to the US with a snapdragon s4.

Wonder if Sony will be using their own in house SoC designs in any upcoming Xperias?

Hope something nice comes out of WP8

Completely incorrect, the One X has the best looking cell phone screen and it's not even close. And it's Super IPS LCD2 not IPS LCD. This screen's miles better than the older IPS LCD's I've seen.

cool, thanks.

buzzword overload imminent.
Yea, I shortened it to IPC LCD... I also shortened "Super AMOLED HD Plus" to "OLED"

Yeah, that One X screen is something else. Way better than the GNexus screen but isn't the SGS3 screen suppose to be an improvement over the GNexus screen?

From what I've read on multiple sites, the pentile effect is less noticeable than on the GNex. Obviously none of us have been able to see it in person yet though.
