This is the 3rd colony that has done this to the Terro bait that I've put down. The first two colonies in a different area have seemed to disappear after a few weeks despite doing this to the bait and not seemingly taking much of it back. They covered the circle entirely with sand and there was very little activity. In this picture you could see they are starting to do the same thing but on the back side you can see a bunch of them still munching from it - they are staying stationary for long periods of time. Do they do this to keep it from evaporating or have they identified this is poison and keeping others away from it?

Perhaps they're trying to communicate with you? See the flower on the box? It's a mafia sign that they're coming to get you. They'd use black roses, but, well, ants really can't travel that far. Next best thing. The ants will be in your house while you're sleeping, seeking revenge for killing off a million members of their family.

Never underestimate intelligence.

The ants were in the middle of enjoying your tasty bait when the aphids revolted. It was a bloodbath.

That flower I placed yesterday on their mound which is 2 feet away (I was outside entertaining my kids). These guys are mocking me aren't they?

It's taking every fiber in my being not to just bust out the can of Raid.

Raid? Very slowly pour about a cup or so of gasoline above where you suspect the main nest to be. Let it sit for 10 minutes. The little suckers may be able to engineer for rainfall, but they haven't figured out how to engineer for gas fumes. Then, toss on a match. Whoooosh!

If I were the OP, I would be very careful about eating the human bait, er . . . human food in the fridge.

My guess : they can't move the bait pad, so they are hiding their find to keep it for themselves.

Then we find out this activity was just a small fraction of their tunneling, and the OP's next post is,"Now that the front of my home and yard is in the sky..."

(I heard someone did that to his backyard and back of his home trying to eliminate moles..)

I don't know if you are trying to kill or observe these ants. My recommendation is the double whammy of Terro (or a cheaper DIY version: boric acid mixed with sugar water) and Amdro.

Boric acid works by over-alkalyzing and slowly busting open their cellular structure. You want boric acid, not Borax or sodium-tetraborate. Even Terra's own literature on the subject is completely wrong. Sodium tetraborate only becomes boric acid in the active presence of another acid, meaning it would take way longer to kill ants with Borax than boric acid.

The ants who seem stationary or spindly and smaller for their size are actually really ill. The andro finishes what the boric acid starts, way more quickly.

Better yet, skip the Terro and go straight for the Ambro. Once a week, lightly sprinkle the Amdro Ant Block around the perimiter of your house inbetween rainfalls, and get ready for ant armageddon over the next month. I almost have forgotten what ants look like.

I've seen ants around here do weird things but that is very weird.

I'm pretty sure mine are impervious to Terro at this point but the two other gel products I have kill them very well.

I find that Terro bait granules suck butt cheese around here. The liquid baits are more effective, but a lot more expensive to use as well.
