What are these things called (small wire posts with flags to stick in ground)?

I want to start a compost pile in my back yard back in the back where the grass does not grow. What I plan to do is, when I have some dinner leftovers, just take a shovel, shovel out some dirt, dump the leftovers into the hole, then cover it back up with dirt. Then the next night, repeat the process in a slightly different spot.

To let me know when and where I've buried some organic stuff, I'd like to put those short, super skinny wire poles in the ground, They are only around a foot or two off the ground, and they typically have some little flag on them (like pink or orange I think). On these flags I want to put the date I buried the organics so I can know when they are sufficiently old so I can come back to them and bury more there.

Any idea what these might be called?

Thanks!

I'm not sure about the flags, but I have been composting like this for several years. This should actually be in the Home and Garden subforum... I put only organic waste that I used to grind up in the disposer. NO grease, animal fat and waste or anything that smells funny.

I just dig a hole, throw in the vegetable waste, add water and bury. The mixture decomposes quickly and attracts worms that help recondition the soil.

Thanks eno! If its under the ground, can you really smell it if you add animal product lefovers? Won't the dirt keep it pretty well insulated Yep yep, definately looking for something that attacts a lot of earthworks.

Thanks!

I know exactly what they're called, and I use them professionally, but I'm not gonna tell you cause that's the dumbest idea I've heard in years.

C'mon man, be cool. If its a dumb idea let me just suffer from my own dumb idea. What are they called? I think they are used in connection with real estate as I always seem them around the edges of peoples yards.

Don't throw away anything except vegetable waste. Meat scraps attract rodents and can stink up your yard.

Against my better judgement I'll actually be useful.

Survey flags or marking flags

Great idea. Wonder why no one ever thought of that before...

Because it's a really dumbass idea.

If you want to compost, then do it properly by turning and aerating it ABOVE GROUND.

Op is simply turning his backyard into a wildcat landfill, and that is illegal in most civilized places on Earth.

Why would you want to cover your yard with flags? If you didn’t care about appearance, why bother composting?

LOL, wat? Are you seriously telling me if I buy some organic material it won't decompose? LOL. Stop being ridiculous. Of course it will. Hell, Emo earlier in this thread says this is exactly what he does and that it works like a charm! Now, would it decompose quicker if I did it above ground in connection with making a compost pile? Sure, maybe. But I don't care. I want the crap in the ground to attract earthworms quicker. So I can feed them to my ants, mostly.

I chinisan, I'm only doing it it my back yard, behind the garage that is not visible unless you specifically walk back there around the back corner of the garage. And then only where grass doesn't grow good because of the shade.

Who the hell said it wouldn't decompose?

Ask your municipal or county health department how they feel about the idea of burying garbage (organic or not) in your back yard before you start doing it

You acted like my idea was "dumbass", and compared it to compost. I simply want shit to decompose under the soil to attract earthworms. What I am talking about works JUST FINE, there is nothing dumbass about it, dumbass. Oh, and now you are recommending I contact my municipal or county health department about burying leftover breads and veggies a foot or less below ground in my back yard?! LOLOLOL, yea, let me get right on that. I'm sure there are laws preventing that. Jeez. PT Barnum was right. A sucker really is born every minute.
