What are these wires? *PIC*

A blank wall plate in our living room is covering these. I thought maybe pre-wiring for surround, but there is nothing like it on the other end and I didn't see where they go in the attic. unknownwires.JPG

Hmm. 4-conductor. Braided copper. I'd say speaker wire. The braiding gives it away.

That's not a DEFINITE answer though. When in doubt, put a VOM on it. They don't have wire nuts on them, so they are probably not carrying any current.

You are assuming that whoever put them there knew what the hell they were doing Those are 4 conductor NM cable good for <=600v.

Lick the ends to see if they are live. That always works.

I was joking... CAT5 is usually smaller than 48ga... and it comes with 8 wires.

Cat 5 is usually 24 or 26 guage. Ever see 48 guage wire? It's very, very small to the point that most people can't tell when there's more than one conductor. That cable looks like it's 14 guage, though I can't get an accurate idea on the scale.

it's not cat 5, so no laptop (or other computer). it may be speaker wire, lots of houses have that run.
