What are you doing for your Win2000 machines?

Since M$ isn't making a KB928388 for anything W2K related, what are you doing to make sure your Windows 2000 workstations and servers are going to be updated? Flat out, i've been trying to use a combination IntelliAdmin's patch and Group Policy, but i'm not having any luck. How about you?

There is a manual process. . .

The question I am trying to figure out is a reboot required?

I found a better way since M$'s registry changes are ridiculous. NetworkAdministrator has a patch for Win9x, NT, and 2000. I just made a wee batch file that applies the fix silently and applied it with Group Policy. I rule!

Congrats, you just recreated what was in the 914387 KB

There's a script at the bottom of that article for the DST changes. Just pop that into a GPO and you're done.

Hmmm. There's a manual way?

We just paid ~$40,000 to get the "official" patches for W2K from M$.

No reboot required. It's a registry change/CurrentControlSet refresh. MS provided a .reg key and VBS file to refresh the registry and note it in the Event Log.

You need to talk to your TAM. The need for a 40k extended contract just for these patches was removed, and you can now get all of them for $4000.

Bottom line is that we want people to get these patches deployed, so if money is a problem (even the 4k), talk to your TAM.

Really the only one you NEED to purchase is the Exchange 2000 patch. The OS patches (NT, 2000) can be scripted fairly easily.

Okay.. allow me to express my ignorance on this matter.

Couldn't one just disable DST on the machine and set the time manually?

Edit: I understand the above wouldn't be preferable if talking dozens or even hundreds of machines such as in a school or enterprise, but for just a couple PCs in small businesses and such.

You could probably do that in a small environment that doesn't have Active Directory. If you manually change the time on any machine that's part of an AD domain, you will break Kerberos authentication.

Okay, that's what I thought. I'm thinking of a particular small organization that I volunteer for that has (4) Win98 boxes and (4) Windows 2000 boxes with no domain or AD in place. I figured if I changed the Time Zone to Indiana East(which doesn't observe DST at all) and then change the time manually, they'd be all set. Any holes in that thinking?

Thanks Stash. We actually needed the Exchange patch anyway. Only 2 (Exch) servers left, but they won't be upgraded in time. In any case, w/ 33,000 employees, it would be hard to argue "money is a problem". LOL
