Just finished a Sam Adams Honey Rye Pale Ale. It's alright. I'm kind of tired of hoppy beers. I don't want to say I don't like hoppy beers, but maybe I don't; dunno... It seems like hoppy is the default profile for craft(ish) beers anymore. Just tired of it I guess. I really enjoyed the black lager from the autumn sampler. I'd like to get some more of that.
Stouts and porters will replace the hops with the subtlety of malt.I disliked IPAs for the longest time, then somehow I got roped into the the spicy bitterness. Now, I think my palate has been wrecked by them, I expect more hops than I get when trying other styles, even old favorites. My bro-in-law- claims your tastes change every so many years; I'm ready to be done with hoppiness myself. It could be that I should take a sabbatical from beer altogether, then start again with less hoppy styles.
Well sure, beers like Black Butte Porter were always my go-to until a few years ago.Stouts and porters will replace the hops with the subtlety of malt.
Those are my favorite styles. Guinness was the first beer I really enjoyed. Previously, I just drank beer to fit in at parties, and after, I wouldn't even consider US adjunct beer. My tastes have expanded over time, and I can even enjoy a cheap macro beer as long as it has /some/ flavor, but I still consider Guinness my true love, even if there's others in the style that are technically better.Stouts and porters will replace the hops with the subtlety of malt.
Black Butte Porter isn't a good porter. Try their Obsidian Stout.Well sure, beers like Black Butte Porter were always my go-to until a few years ago.
I found the Obsidian Stout to have a slightly burnt flavor that I seem to be overly sensitive to, it keeps me from enjoying some stouts as well as I should.Black Butte Porter isn't a good porter. Try their Obsidian Stout.
For a much better porter, try Samuel Smith's Tadcaster Porter. Stouts do tend to have a heavier roast. You might also try the slightly winy burn of Imperials or barley wines.I found the Obsidian Stout to have a slightly burnt flavor that I seem to be overly sensitive to, it keeps me from enjoying some stouts as well as I should.
