Never been much of a rum drinker. Do you usually just have it on the rocks, or how?
I've been drinking the rum I posted above neat, as I would a decent whisky. It's rich, flavorful, and complex. Perhaps not as complex as a malt, but it has a lot to offer. I never thought much of rum, but I'm gonna have to explore it more going forward.

OT, but what happened to scotch prices? I was looking at Dalmore cigar malt over the weekend, and it was well over $100. It wasn't that long ago I could get it for ~$50. All the scotch really skyrocketed, well beyond normal inflation. Can't remember what it was, but the most expensive I saw was $1,900. Interesting cause it was on the open shelf. Stores usually put that class of whisky behind the counter. I thought I was just getting old, and living in the past regarding prices, but they've far exceeded normal inflationary increases,

For me it depends on the rum. Cheaper stuff I buy to mix but there are rums like gosling's black seal that mix very well with ginger beer but can also be taken neat.

I am a fan of indie bottlings in particular. Like the kill devil I posted earlier. High ester Jamaican rums have a unique fruity/butterscotch taste and should not be mixed.....I have also had indie bottlings from several defunct stills. Which typically go for north of 200 bucks a bottle. I never mix indie bottlings with soft drink or ice.

If you have to mix the pricier stuff then you probably got ripped off.

Quite possibly the most revolting rum I have ever tasted. Even mixing it with coke doesn't help much. Still for 16 euro a bottle what can you expect.......?

Attractive label anyway.

That's what scares me about tequila. There's a virtually endless supply of good looking bottles, and ime, many times packaging is used to move sub par product. Hard to tell which it is til you've given them your money. I stick with the couple winners I've found, and haven't ventured further.

Hint cherry flavored water. It's pretty good, but pricey without the introductory discount.

Asbach Privat Brand brandy again. Really been digging this. Maybe some Old Overholt next.

The more I have the Michter's, the more I like it. It tastes "coppery" to me, like a horehound candy or molasses. I'm not really good at identifying flavors, so I can't tell you what "coppery" means other than it tastes like that to me. The Pikesville is similar, and only slightly more expensive. You can mix it down with water(I take it down to ~90 proof), so it might be the better value. These are both low rye ryes; MD style. They're sweeter, and more approachable imo. High ryes in the Monongahela style are drier, sharper, and more "grainy". Old Overholt is the only one recently I've had like that. An old Bottle of Wild Turkey from 80s was also a high rye, but I don't know if the newer product is the same, or if they even make it anymore. I've wanted to try some more high ryes, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Rittenhouse kind of splits them, and is moderately priced, but it just doesn't stand out for me. It's a solid whiskey at $20, but nothing exceptional.

tl;dr
Michter's or Pikesville depending on price. If they were objectively equal(same strength, generic bottle, whatever...) I think the nod would go to Michter's. Pikesville has the sharp looking bottle, and the higher proof will go farther by adding water.

edit:
Sagamore rye is pretty good also. They blend a high rye and low rye together to make a medium rye. I want to go on a distillery tour to ask why they do that instead of distilling a medium in the first place They just fired up the Baltimore stills this spring, so all the product on the shelves today is from MGP in Indiana, and it's mixed down with MD farm water. I'm looking forward to trying the 100% MD product. Their Moscatel bottling is exceptional, but it's limited release, and ~$90. Not sure that's a good one to start with for someone who isn't sure they even like whiskey. The standard bottling isn't as good as Michter's or Pikesville at approximately the same price. It wins points from me for being the hometown brand, but you wouldn't have that connection.

I haven't been able to find anything you recommended, but the guy working liquor recommended Bulleit 95, so I bought a bottle. I might try it tonight. I've got lots of chocolate syrup to mix it with.

Haven't had that one. Online reviews look good, and I'd be interested in hearing your opinion.

Starting early today to celebrate the first snow. Asbach Privat Brand again, and I've got chestnuts roasting under a glowing wire(my toaster oven). It's a good day.

Sam Adams Amber Bock. It's beer. Tastes good, but nothing really stands out for me. Came in the Winter Classics 12pack.

Hot buttered rum, made with aldi mix, and Pussers rum. It's not bad. Not amazing either. I was gonna give it to my daughter for jul, but now I'm not sure.

Wow. Tastes like toasted marshmallow, birthday cake, and a hint of coconut. Not as generally drinkable as the Pussers cause it's so dessert like, but the taste is fantastic, and will make a great after dinner dessert drink.

Rum's WAY more interesting than I gave it credit for. It's gonna be fun exploring the different makes. Bonus is it's pretty cheap. I think I paid about $30 for this bottle. Hard to beat price.

edit:
Also getting a hint of Irish pot still in the finish. I think this is a keeper.

with a splash of

When I say a splash, I mean a very light splash. It adds an extra dimension to the brandy. I got the idea from following rum with brandy without cleaning the glass. I could smell the rum as I drank the brandy, and it added to the experience. The brandy gives the rum a little more body(my only complaint with this rum), and the rum adds a little soft sweetness to the brandy without being too sweet.

This is an interesting rum the initial taste makes it feel like it is going to be brutal but then it tapers away to a peachy almost butterscotch finish....it's one of the final bottlings from the now defunct uitvlugt distillery. The finish makes it very similar to an angostura offering.

I saw a similar bottling at K&L but I'm not sure I can spend $200 on a bottle of rum. They had a $20 bottle I'll probably pick up.
