I blame you Americans for turning Stout from a fantastic dark bitter complex drink into some sort of hideous desert flavoured with marshmallows and whatever other crap you can think of to throw at it to make it not taste like its supposed to!

I'm actually very cross about this.

But carry on.

I mean Imperial Stout is supposed to be bitter and dark. That's the entire point of it.
Its fine if you don't like that, but it's like people have some sort of inferiority complex about not liking it so they have to throw a load of sweet things into it so they can drink it.

JUST DRINK SOMETHING ELSE! DONT SPOIL SOMETHING THATS ALREADY THERE JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE IT!

That's like me demanding they stop selling onion rings because I see fried calamari.

I'm not saying that they should stop selling it, I'm just saying that them selling it annoys me and I'm going to be super judgmental about someone that has to sweeten up a drink that shouldn't be sweet just to drink it.

I ran outta beer so I have some vodka and a ton of different syrups to make fruit soda drinks with the drinkmate. I'm only on my second one but its painfully apparent I need to dial down the alcohol.

Pastry Stouts have their place but you are right, a great 9% Stout that tastes of coffee and dark chocolate is getting harder to find. They aren't that popular of a brew so breweries just arent producing them in volume and switched over to to juicy hazy double IPA's - blech. A good west coast bitter IPA like Torpedo is not getting the shelf space like they used to.

https://lagunitas.com/beer/imperial-stout-ale - used to be year around

https://sierranevada.com/beer/narwhal/ - sold out quick

https://sierranevada.com/beer/barrel-aged-narwhal/ - was able to snag two 4-packs

https://ballastpoint.com/beer/victory-at-sea/ - Impossible to find unless you are the brewery

A localish brewery to me, Free Will, makes a great stout called Ralphius. It does come in a bunch of flavors now, but I'm still working on my case of 2016 "Vintage"(Because I've had the case that long lol).

20% by vol! No marshmallow or peanut butter or jelly beans!
This I would like to try!

There is honestly tons of brews like this. See ones from breweries like Avery with their barrel aged series - and plenty of others from Bruery. Not all of them are pastry stouts.

Rumpkin is fucking amazing:

Find Christian Brother Sacred Bond Brandy - 100-proof, aged 4yrs. About $20.

I'm a Remy Martin fan as well. It's a bit pricier than the $7.99 E&J Spiced...
So I decide to give the brandy section at my local store a second glance because I enjoyed the E&J so much. I was wrong about their Cognac selection being limited to just Hennessey. I was just looking in the wrong place. Turns out they have a decent selection of Cognacs so I decided to take your suggestion and give Remy Martin a chance.

My last trip I had to pick a "Spiced" up - its ridiculously syrupy sweet but do enjoy the spice

Tonight's pairing

I'll be honest I'm a sucker for the sweet stuff and the Spiced has it in spades haha. How do you pair the JB and E&J? Do you mix them?
Anyway, thanks for suggestion on the RM it's really good but kind of took me off guard. It almost has a whiskey flavor to it that I wasn't expecting. That's not a bad thing it was just a pleasant surprise.

"Pairing" was a bit of a joke. After about 2oz's of the E&J I switched over to bourbon which I enjoy immensely. The Remy is made from high end champagne grapes and should come across as much more fruity than bourbon but with all liquors rested in Oak they do get similar tasting notes

Buy yourself a bottle of this, especially if you enjoy bourbon. https://www.binnys.com/spirits/brandy/christian-brothers-sacred-bonded-brandy-950854

This is currently on my shopping list: https://www.copperandkings.com/sierra-nevada-narwhal/

I forgot to take a picture of the consumed beers last night but at the start of the evening my wife complained "We don't have any variety in the fridge!"

I counted and we have 31 different beers in there. So I added 5 more

We get it. People on your small island like crappy beer and get angry when other people far away make things they like and then drink them
