Tonight started with a Stone smoked porter with vanilla bean. I'm going to move on to a nice scotch in a minute. Possibly Glenfiddich age of discovery bourbon cask or maybe something a little more muted.

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION:
Sweet Evil BBW is fermented with both British and Belgian yeasts to create a memorable smoothness for this Belgian-style barley wine-style ale. Sweet malt flavors will become smoother and rich dark fruit characters will build with time to add a wonderful complexity and depth of flavor.

My take:
Unbelievably sweet with no real Belgian qualities, and very little barley-wine. I had a really hard time detecting anything but thick sweetness. As it warmed from 56% to room temp 69% it started to open up and release some barley wine notes, but not enough to overcome the candy sweetness.

Dansk Mjød Viking Blod

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION:
Nordic honey wine with hibiscus and hops added. Based on a recipe from about year 1700.
My take:
The difference between the nose and taste on this is SOOOOO different. At first pour there is a massive amount of lighter fluid\alcohol with a little sweetness. The front end is delicious floral honey and spice. The finish is clean and quick. At 19% I would recommend having help if you plan on finishing off the bottle.

Fortunately Four Roses products are still readily obtainable around here. I've shifted over to their Small Batch and Single Barrel offerings lately since I can still actually buy them.

Anything made by Buffalo Trace (except for Old Charter) has totally vanished...the Eagle Rare, Weller, regular BT, Blanton's is all gone and nobody knows when there will be more.
