What is a good affordable entry one malt scotch to try out?

Also what is a good cheap light or gold rum?

A good single malt scotch? Tastes vary widely, and your palate probably won't appreciate a lot of peat at this point, so I'd stick to an entry-level offering from a major Speyside distillery like Glenfiddich, Glenlivet or Macallan (I'm partial to the Macallan 12 year myself; should run you about $50).

A good cheap rum, I'm assuming for mixing? I'm partial to Appleton at the super-low-end ($13 for their white or gold rums), but if you are willing to go up to ~$20, you can find a lot of great entries that make some incredible mixed drinks: Flor de Cana 4 year (gold or white, both excellent offerings), Appleton VX, or Denizen aged white rum (this one is particularly interesting and I really, really like it for mixed drinks at the price, but availability might be an issue). Do not, whatever you do, get Bacardi or Cruzan, or Captain Morgan's for that matter. They are overpriced garbage at the low end.

Was wanting to avoid those rums if possible. Not a huge fan of Captain Morgan spiced rum so I was wondering if their white rum is any good. As far as spiced rum I tend to want to drink Sailor Jerry or sometimes the Kraken black spiced rum.

In that case my recommendation of Flor de Cana stands, although I'd spring for the 7 year for sipping. Bacardi 8 is said to be a decent sipper/mixer, and it's under $25. The Denizen white rum is a great mixer at the price; it's a blend of a bunch of different Jamaican and Trinidadian rums and it's utterly unique and significantly complex for a sub-$20 rum. When you get into the $20-30 range you have a ton of good options open up; Plantation 3 Star, El Dorado, Angostura, Appleton Reserve, etc. But I'd start with Flor de Cana or Denizen; good for both sipping and mixed drinks, and relatively inexpensive. Good value rums.

So the liquor store was having a sale and I decided to get this on a whim; $20 for a well reviewed aged rum? Not a bad deal. And I have to say, this stuff is really, really good. Entry level Bacardi is some of the worst swill on the planet, but their 8 year rum is incredible. It's got a smokiness almost like a Scotch (my wife actually compared it to Scotch when she tried it), and a nice mellow woodiness undercutting the traditional rum flavors. I'm generally partial to Appleton rums based almost solely on nostalgia (it reminds me of my honeymoon, although Appleton certainly makes a great product even without the personal feelings attached). But I think Bacardi 8 will replace it on my cocktail shelf for the foreseeable future. It's perfect in a Cuba Libre, it's delightful in a rum old fashioned, and it makes, bar none, the best daiquiri I've ever had. I followed Jeffrey Morgenthaler's preferred daiquiri ratio (10:3:2) and it is magical.

2.5 ounces Bacardi 8 year old rum
0.75 ounce fresh squeezed lime juice (a full small lime or half a large lime)
0.5 ounce rich demerara syrup (2 parts demerara sugar dissolved in 1 part water); you can sub in a few teaspoons of regular sugar instead of demerara syrup and the drink will still be splendid, I just happened to have the syrup lying around

Shake with ice, strain into a chilled cocktail glass, no garnish. Superb. I've tried it with lots of different rums, but the Bacardi 8 brings something to the table that elevates the daiquiri from "good drink" to "one of my all time favorite cocktails."

Last night I mixed things up with a nigori sake. Turns out it might have been a mistake to drink the whole bottle when I was already feeling pretty sleepy, cause I passed right the hell out and woke up with a minor hangover. So today, we're going with coffee, Coke, maybe an energy drink... a superhuman dose of caffeine, basically.

Ummm, so it's come to my attention that I may not like white rum anymore. Bought two bottles of "colored" rum and now the white just sucks. Bad for mixing and straight.

I finally finished a 200ML bottle of Disaronno I had lying around my apartment since I moved in a year ago.

Yea, I really don't drink, but have been feeling sorta shitty because I am alone on Christmas. :'( It was a syrupy mess after being in my freezer all this time. Just downed half the bottle and feel nothing.
