Hennessy Cognac XO (750 ML)
$239.99

94 PTS WINE ENTHUSIAST, DOUBLE GOLD SAN FRANCISCO SPIRITS COMPETITION. Fat, rich flavors with hints of charred oak and a slight sweetness in the finish.

I've had it and didn't like it at all. I was pretty meh on even the Paradis which is $600. The most tolerable big producer cognac that I've had is out of Remey Martin's more exclusive lines but you won't find me buying up bottles of them either. Generally prefer smaller producers with bottles in the $70-$120ish range.

Though anymore I find myself drinking armagnac and domestic brandy (Germain-Robin or Osocalis) since a lot of cognac pricing is out of line for the quality.

Fiancee will be drinking root beer float because I am awesome at grocery shopping and got both root beer and vanilla ice cream. I will drink water of the tap with or without ice cubes.

Good cognac is tasty. None of the generally available Hennessy products are good cognac.

I had a bottle of Hennessy Paradis once (not all in one sitting) and it was excellent. The Richard Hennessy is supposed to be excellent as well, but fuck $4,500 a bottle for liquor. The XO is fairly meh, especially with other great cognacs in the price range (like Martell Cordon Bleu or Hardy Noces d'Or). But generally, cognac prices are absurd for what you get. A bottle of Remy Martin VSOP goes for around $50 here, and it's basically on par with a $15 bottle of Paul Masson VSOP domestic brandy. At the bleeding edge, I don't know if there's a liquor on Earth I prefer to cognac, but when that bleeding edge costs literally a hundred times as much as something that's perfectly decent, a reasonable person has to say "fuck that." Good cognac is a revelatory experience, but that revelation quickly becomes "did I really just spend a month's rent on that?"

Covered some of that in my subsequent post. I've had Paradis...it left me pretty "meh" particularly for five times more than cognac that would get me 95% of the way there. The values just aren't there IMO for most of the premium bottlings.

As I said, I much prefer sticking to armagnac and domestic brandy from a couple distilleries which haven't gone totally out of their god damn minds on price. Even worse the whiskey world is now in about the same place as cognac.

The whiskey world might be getting crazy at the high end, but the low end of the scale is still sensible. You can get some great whiskies for under $25; you can't get ANY cognac that cheap, and any cognac under $100 is pretty terrible. Even Scotch has more reasonable pricing than that.

I'm a little strapped for cash right now with the holidays coming so it's BL for me. My homebrews are about ready though so betters times are ahead.
I have a nice nut brown and a belgian about a week away from being ready. Yum!

If you know what you're looking for at $25 you can still do ok. The $30-$100ish range however is totally overrun with bad to mediocre whiskey poured into cool looking bottles with a bs story printed on them and the over $100 market is a near total shit show. I browsed around a little liquor store the other day and noticed they had some of the BTAC in a glass case...starting at $1100 on the low end.

I was tired as fuck, so I drank a pot of coffee. That gave me far too much energy so I started tempering it with some cocktails; a boulevardier, a Jack Rose, and... well, I haven't had a third yet, but something. And then I'll toddle off to bed since I have to work this weekend because apparently this is the time of year when everything needs to be done IMMEDIATELY. Dammit....

Got a 1.5L bottle of Duvel I'm going to share with a friend tomorrow night.
